Feed Traffic Question

How do so many folks get wind of exciting traffic on some of the more obscure feeds so quickly? An example is the Carson City Nevada feed went to #2 on the system because of a 200 acre fire.

I can only speak for myself here but I have alerts set on my Android phone on the Scanner Radio app that alerts me when X amount of people are listening to X feed. Also, if I see/hear/read something on the news I may or may not fire up the stream to take a listen. Calls like the recent Virginia Tech shooting I try not to listen too much so that people in the area that may be affected can have first priority listening.
