This weekend two friends and I are going to try and repeat our Winter Field Day fun.

Winter Field Day 20 23

Today I hauled a bunch of supplies up to our cabin-- water especially, since there isn't snow fields nearby to melt-- and the stuff coming out of the site's abandon'd mine is a poisonous looking green.
But the roads are all clear now and driving up there is easy.

This Field Day we decided to add a bit of a challenge.
We included a straight code key-- and each of us will attempt one CW contact each before moving on to 'phone. My two friends are woefully non-code hams (even though one is an Extra Class) ---I can do it, tho I have no love of the mode. But with the liberal addition of wine it should be quite a Morse Code-circus ;)

The whole weekend will be a blast..... and contrary to some rumours, we will not celebrate Solstice by dancing in drunken abandon, naked, around a bonfire --- at least not this year.

If you say so, though you might want to explain what you mean..... I haven't a clue.

Well, that FD concluded a great time :) .

I don't know how it affected others but we had terrible propagation.
20 metre's was pretty much a bust until late Saturday afternoon when it opened up to the West Coast and Western Canada-- however nothing we considered DX. 40 wasn't much better as night fell... 6 to 800 miles was the best, but then we had generally weak signals and a very high noise level-- was there a solar disturbance ?

Still, that didn't dampen the fun. The weather was absolutely perfect-- indigo blue skies by day and absolutely black windless night skies-- we were at 12,000 feet, after all. At night the Milky Way flames over head.
We built fires in a fire ring after dinner Friday and Saturday, and enjoyed watching the Alpen glow remnants of the sun-setting below the western mountains until, even with a fire, it got too chilly to remain outdoors.
This captured the whole Gestalt of a Field Day --- and the wine didn't hurt at all.

We had made a few puny attempts at CW.... my two cohorts got the Morse "CQ FD" down, sort of... but when they got answers I had to finish the contacts. Again, the addition of wine to the mix really spiced things up--- depending on your perspective. It was generally agreed that the two 'no-codes' had given it the "old college try"-- but resolved that it would not be repeated any time soon.

Unfortunately there were some other engagements pressing on Sunday so we were up and down the mountains early-- never finishing FD.
That was ok, since this was all about the fun of being together, (we kept no log except callsigns to avoid duplicate contacts) --with a little ham radio thrown in.

There are a couple definitions of catfishing like pretending to be some else that you arent (like the show), but in this instance, I was talking about Catfishing like fishing for catfish who usually lurk in dark, dirty water like in lakes, ponds, and rivers. They like snow melt water at least where I live.
