I have the HP-1E and even though it doesn't have the NFM filter, it has out performed the 536HP. This is true when using the RS 800mhz and Yagi antenna. Maybe that's the problem with the 536HP ? It has too much filtering. Wasn't there a time where it was suggested that we use FM instead of NFM with the 536HP to help out with P25 reception?

I feel it ($500) is high, considering the apparent lack of quality control and other issues the new Uniden radios suffer from. The specials on the 396XT and 996XT for about $300 right now are about the right prices for those radios, and if I had the cash available, I have to buy tires soon, I would probably buy a 396XT now. The X36 radios are worth even less to me.

Ham HF rigs come with places to plug in high quality high priced filters. It's funny how Uniden offers a firmware upgrade to save money but not filter sockets.

Not really. Firmware is just another chunk of data to upload to scanner, no different than frequency data that must be uploaded to scanner for it to work. Not both are uploaded to scanner when you "Write To Scanner" in Sentinel, if a firmware update is available.

Adding filter sockets would require allowing users to access the guts of the scanner not normally accessible to the casual user. And the uniden haters would be like "$600 for a scanner and it doesn't even include a decent NFM filter so I have to buy my own?!!?!??!?? Class action lawsuit!!!111!!"

If the HP2 sells well someone may produce an aftermarket filter on a daughter board. It would have to be small and would have to be soldered in but it has been done in the ham world. Who knows?

Single lot of the narrowband filter on mouser is less than $3.50. Buying in quantity would bring the price per filter to less than $1.50. So Uniden saved $1.50 and maybe $0.50 in support switching transistors by not including the narrowband filter. I think they just got lazy and pushed another scanner on the market that will be replaced in a few years with a HP3 with true NFM filter.

An HP-3? Makes me wonder why Whistler hasn't come out with something competitive.

Whistler doesn't have a design team even remotely as talented as Uniden does. For the most part, Whistler just takes existing designs and blueprints and builds the product.
