We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

Many times the press is asked to send a message to a suspect or the bad guy asks for confirmation of a fact or gets the press attention that they are looking for.

Below is an article/editorial released this morning. According to some resources there may be a major break in the case.

Cold, cruel attackers force us to keep guard up

Aug. 4, 2006 12:00 AM

Let's face it. Someone is trying to kill us.

Actually, two someones. Two cruel and calculating monsters whose sole purpose is to inflict terror, pain and death.

They are remarkably good at it.

Think of "Jack the Ripper," or the "Son of Sam." Each of the Valley's serial attackers has already matched or exceeded their legendary body counts.

And when taken together, the 14 deaths now attributed to the "Baseline Killer" and the "Serial Shooter" have surpassed the Washington, D.C., sniper spree that horrified the nation four years ago.

If this were happening in one of the nation's media capitals, you'd be seeing regular updates on the network news. Anderson Cooper would be here, fresh from Lebanon. Matt Drudge would be all over it.

Not that this is about national attention, but it's just that we must, for the sake of our lives, understand the enormity of what is happening here. Because someone - someone who is oblivious of the news, or someone who thinks bad things only happen to other people - is going to be next.

These killers are as prolific as they are remorseless.

The Serial Shooter is believed to have committed at least 36 crimes. Early on, many of the shootings were of animals. Then, it was people. So far, six of them have died.

Twice in recent days the Serial Shooter is believed to have struck in Mesa. On July 22, he shot a bicyclist at Stapley Drive and Brown Road. The bicyclist lived. Then on Sunday night, he murdered a young woman as she walked near Brown and Gilbert roads, a mile from the scene of the July 22 attack.

This represents a major expansion of his theater of operations. So it does no good to think that because you live where the criminals have not yet struck, you are safe. Your neighborhood, far from any of the dots on the police department's map, could as easily be next.

The Baseline Killer likewise has grown more violent as his spree has lengthened. He now is believed to be responsible for eight homicides. Last week police added the February murders of two women in a lunch truck in the Southwest Valley to the list of his probable crimes.

The killers differ in method.

The Baseline Killer is brazen. He apparently approaches his victims on foot before attacking. He has allowed himself to be seen by some who were fortunate enough to escape with their lives. Their descriptions, however, are sketchy, and the killer probably wears disguises.

So far as is known, no one has ever seen the Serial Shooter in operation. He (assuming it is a one-man operation, unlike the D.C. sniper case) uses a vehicle to approach lone victims, none of whom has ever provided a description.

Only after the blessed day comes when these fiends are apprehended will we begin to comprehend what drives them. But some sort of sociopathic ego trip must be involved, and it would be no surprise if one or both killers were actually reading this very editorial for the sheer narcissistic enjoyment of their notoriety.

If that's the case, here's an open invitation to the two of you: Give Alex Femenia a call at (602) 262-6141. He's a Phoenix police detective, and he's waiting for the phone to ring. Go ahead. Show some real courage for a change.

As for the rest of us, it cannot be stressed enough to keep our guard up. That's always good advice because random criminals are always out there. But now is not the time for bravado. To be alone outdoors in lonely places, especially after dark, is to invite tragedy.

We hate to live our lives this way, yes. But better to be cautious than dead.

And we can't help but believe someone out there knows something. These guys must have acquaintances, workmates, relatives. Something about their habits must be suspicious to someone.

Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS or 1-800-343-TIPS is waiting for the phone to ring, too. If moral suasion isn't enough, perhaps the $100,000 reward now attached to each of the killers will serve as incentive.

Meanwhile, thank you to the legions of police officers who are burning the midnight oil and shoe leather to track these killers. Thank you to the alert citizens now on the lookout for suspicious activity. Thank you to the Guardian Angels, who have shown up in the Valley as an extra set of eyes and ears.

But these criminals are clever, cold, patient and unpredictable. It probably will take an extraordinary set of circumstances to trip one or both of them up.

We hope to God that happens. It's summer, and it's hot, but our beautiful Valley shivers in the icy grip of fear.

Pray it's over soon.

I eluded to that earlier but at the time there was no confirmation as to which case. (and you know how flamers are on this site :))

The part that bugs me is why are they waiting so long for any information to be released...

Yesterday I heard on the news that these guys had "terrorized Phoenix for more than a year". Obviously these are bad guys, despicable, all that. But it seems to me that if Phoenix was terrorized, it was because of the media's reporting. Without articles like the one Stimuli posted, the public would have blissfully ignorant. It proved to be the case in the DC killings too. Bad situations made worse by reporters looking for headlines. -Rod-
