Finding Names for Talkgroup IDs

Hello all,
I am a very new member and I have to say that this site just became my best scanner frequency site. I work a Radio Shack and I am always trying to keep updated on freqs. in my area so I can pass them on to my customers. For years now we have had about one person a day come in and ask us if we had freqs to the local refineries, and for years I have been trying to locate those freqs. My search is now over thanks to RadioReference.com.
While I am very greatful for RR for helping me find the freqs. for the refineries, I still have one more challenge and that is to locate the names for all the talkgroups for the refineries. RR only list 5 talkgroups and I know there are more than that. The refinery I worked at prior to Radio Shack had about 25 units and each had their own talkgroup.
Can I contact someone who works for these refineries and ask for information even during the tightened security today. I definantly do not want to be mistaken for a terrorist.

Take one of the PRO-83s with the Signal Stalker or whatever they call it and hang out near the refineries. Don't look too suspicious, though.

Actually there are only two ways to get the proper info on TG ID's...

1: Get ahold to one of the radios.
2: Spend some QT monitoring the system with a trunker and listen closely to each and every TG that pops up...

If you run that trunking system in open mode then as you hear new talk groups you will have to make up your own name for that group. The only other way is to borrow one of their WT's Pay attention to what they are talking about. Should tell you something.

The reson I ask about finding the names of the talkgroups is because each proccessing unit has its own ID, and if an accident or "God Forbid" and explotion occurs, I know witch unit it has happened at (Alky1,2,3, Cat. Cracker, DDU, UU4,etc.) and what chemicals might be involved. Plus it gives me a chance to keep up with my buddies.

I have the E-Mail address to the person that handles all the radio licenses from the FCC and I am just wondering if the law requires them to make these records available to the public. Plus, I dont want them to think I am a terrorist and have the FBI out looking for me. That is why I have not E-Mailed her yet.

Sounds like what happened back in High School when you were afraid to call a girl because of what she might think. Except you dont get thrown in jail if she rejects you.

The refinery doesnt have to give the Tgs to you because it is not a govermental agency supported by your tax dollars(ie Freedom of Information Act). Even if it was a govermental agency, govt agencies are very reluctant to give out TGs , there have been may topics on that very subject on this board.Like previous posts have said your best bet is to listen to the refinery keeping note of what you hear . I just posted a similar post on the Trunking Fourm then came over and read this one.

You just answered my question, even though it was not the answer I was hoping for. I believe you are right, but I still think I should E-Mail this lady and see if they would send me a ID list (maybe out of the kindness of their hearts) :wink: You will never know unless you try.

One side of me is saying, "Send an aynonomus E-Mail. A simple E-Mail is not a threat. The worst they can do is say no."

My practical side is saying, "Look how everyone acted when they seen someone taking pictures of the plant. They jumped to concultions and he was imediately connected with the terrorists."

Right now I am leaning toward sending an aynonomus E-Mail from hotmail and I think that would be alright. I guess what I am trying to say is I want peoples oppinion and/or support.

If you know this person well, I would try to talk to the person directly and not on email. you might do better that way.

you best bet if you are not buddy buddy with this person is to listen in and make up your own TGs.

OK, I have a plan to get the IDs. I talked with one of my buddies that still work in the plant and he said he can let me barrow his radio while he is not working! Anyway, the last I remember the plant had their radio system contracted out and if I can find out who the contractor is I might be able to talk to them. I think it was called IRS Radio. I am going to get thoses ID names come hell or high water! I will share the info when I get it.

Be careful when sharing info, the company could be on these forums and you could be getting your friend in trouble for him letting you borrow his radio. All I am saying is be careful what you post.

Matt, as a general rule, you will get less information out of the contractor doing the radio work then the client. The reason is, the TG assignments are private and propriatary (evern on government owned systems) and the contractor has an obligation to protect the client's information. The client of course is responstible for thier own information.
