Finding the correct ID numbers with the correct frequencies

I just bought a new Bearcat 796D, my old scanner was about 15 years old so these ID numbers and Frequencies numbers are a bit new to me. I have been able to enter some of my old frequencies and have no problem connecting to the old communications.

My problem is with the new ID Truck Talk groups I cannot find the correct ID and matching frequency numbers for my local State Police Post. I know that that my Post number is 74, I know what district it's in, but I cannot seem to find the correct freq. or ID number? I have search this website throughly but cannot seem to figure out how to get numbers that will get me scanning the correct station. I confirmed that I am programming it right, and that the scanner is working properly, the tech. people just tell me that I have the wrong ID Talk Groups Numbers or Wrong Frequencies.

I located in Alpena Michigan, it's in the northeast part of lower Michigan. My district is 7 and again my State Police Post is 74 that I am trying to monitor.

Any assistance or suggestions would be very much welcomed.

Brian, welcome to the site.

First, specific information about what tower you should be programming is probably better handled in the Mich. state forum. However, in case you can identify it yourself, go to the State of Michigan Public Safety Communications System here on the site and see if you can identify the correct tower from the site list. Enter those frequencies and then look further down the page at the Talkgroup list. Find the TG's you want, enter them in the ID Scan bank and then start trunk tracking. The key to remember about Trunktracking is that Talkgroup ID's are frequency independent. They may appear on any frequency on the system, what you need to do is identify what frequencies you can hear where you are and what TG's you want to listen to. :wink:

I will not get into the active/passive part of trunktracking, first get you local stuff going. When you wonder why you can't hear something from another part of the state, you can ask that question then.

The Database shows two towers in the Alpena Area that I can see, they are Tower 406 (Alpena North) and Tower 411 (Alpena). It only shows 5 TG for district 7. Put those two towers in seperate banks, be sure to set the banks as trunked and the freqs as trunked. You might want to use ID SEARCH to find the active TG's in your area. Have fun scanning.
