Probably because I was monitoring a "potential interference source" ;-)
I think you can just make out the top Sunaire was on 11175, another source of potential interference.......

Possibly this?

§ 97.401 Operation during a disaster.
A station in, or within 92.6 km (50 nautical miles) of, Alaska may transmit emissions J3E and R3E on the channel at 5.1675 MHz (assigned frequency 5.1689 MHz) for emergency communications. The channel must be shared with stations licensed in the Alaska-Private Fixed Service. The transmitter power must not exceed 150W PEP. A station in, or within 92.6 km of, Alaska may transmit communications for tests and training drills necessary to ensure the establishment, operation, and maintenance of emergency communication systems.

I think the sdr is a good idea, just wonder how long I would have to camp out to log a hit. I have a old optoelectronics scout for VHF/UHF freq logging. Wish there was a near field HF receiver that auto logged hits.

There are two main factors I can think of. First is that I would want to use a wide bandwidth SDR - the wider the better so you can watch as much spectrum as possible at one time.

The other is activity. If it's used once in a blue moon, the effort of any means may be rather futile.

I wonder if an upconverter would work with the Scout for logging.

You would need to scan from say 3 to 30MHz and watch it all the time .....boring.
Winradio G33DDC would do the job but rather expensive for a simple task. How about an "untuned" receiver - just an antenna and a diode detector connected to a high gain audio amplifier - you'll have to listen from your car near the antenna to avoid getting all the mains hum and other interference. Similar idea to the "RF sniffers" that security services use to find bug transmitters.

Its not on the AK emergency freq of 5.1675, basically no one is.

I have a WINRADIO G305e that I could devote to this search, I would have to put a rubber duck on it and leave it at the site in a pelican case under a tree. Any thoughts on logging software?

Hmmm... leaving a semi-hidden case at a government communications site. Doesn't sound like a particularly good idea to me...

The area is heavily wooded, I would not leave anything on the site or actual government property, probably just in the general area. Plus, too many dog walkers come thru the area and my gear might grow legs.
