I heard Va Bch dispatch send Eng 11, Eng 14, Ladder 14 and Eng 8 on a call. Did they send 8 because it is a substation for 14? Also, if I am not mistaken, I hear Eng 21 going with Rescue 5 sometimes.

Eng 8 is not a substation for anything out of Station 11. you are thinking rescue side of things. Rescue 5 and Rescue 21 are run by the same rescue squad

I was under the impression that 14 and 8 were the same. I hear "824" call into VaBch on the 800. Then i see "1424" pull in with a patient.

Fire and EMS are different
I understand that. I am just wondering why they dispatch the way they do. Eng 14 is in one part of town and 8 is in another. But rescue unit 14 (1424) hangs out at station 8 (824). So when there is a call in 14's area and no rescue units they send 8 (which is really a 14). My question is: Is that why they call Eng 8 for help at a call for Eng 14? Why not call 5, 16, 21 or some other station? I am thinking because 8 and 14 are sister stations they do everything together. Just like Eng 5 and Eng 21. Rescue 5 (520) hangs out at station 21 (2120) also.
I don't know anyother way to get my question across.

You have to separate rescue numbers and fire station numbers.
Yes rescue 14 and 8 are run by the same rescue squad(14)
Station 11 and station 8 are two separate stations
The fire call for E11, E14, L11, E8 means that the location of the call is between the two stations
The E21 rescue call with rescue 5 - it could be that E5 was on another call, E21 was back-filling Co. 5 or the call was just outside E5's territory and in E21 territory.

And to add to the mix there is a brand new rescue station ( think its called station 8 also) behind Fire Station 8 this station has a lot of ems admin and supervisors running out of it, Fire Station 8 no longer has any ambulances in it

certain calls have depending on their type require X amount of engine companys , ladders and squads. 8 and 14 are pretty close also

Ok to answer this correctly. As stated previous depending on the call, x amount of equipment gets dispatched. For example, a residential structure alarm consists of three engines, one ladder, and a battalian chief. The closest geographical units are then dispatched. This info pops up on the dispatcher's monitor. Station 8 and 11 run a lot of calls together because they are each other's neighbor and not "sister" stations. It also depends if a unit is tied up at another call, or if they are out of their first due area. Then again, closest unit comes into play. Sometimes you'll hear the dispatcher ask unit locations (very common on EMS) so they can get the equipment there faster. They will divert the closer unit to the call. Hence why Rescue 8 will cover 14, it's their second due area. Also, why Engine 8 will pick up a call for Engine 14. Engine 8 can get to some of 14's first due area faster than Engine 12 can, which is also 11's neighbor. Does this answer your question a little bit better?

Yes. I was thinking that ems out of 8 would go for a 14 call. Because when you see the unit it has 1421 on it and not 821. Also with 5 (520) is also 2120. I was confused as to the fact that an eng 8 would go to an eng 14 call and eng 5 go to a 21 call (vise versa). As mentioned below I guess 222 would go out of station 7 (722?). And kempsville and stumpy lake. Etc, etc...

It works a little different on the EMS side. Most rescue squad's first due areas are a lot bigger geographically than fire's first due areas. This why you see the EMS substations. Rescue 5 has the biggest first due area out of all the squads and Rescue 9 is a close second. Or is it the other way around? I cant remember it was too long ago lol. When their area covers another fire station they will run another unit out of that location to beef up the first response area and to keep response times down. These are subject to personnel restrictions so they are not manned all the time, but that could have changed too. If the substation is manned then they will pick up calls for the other, like you stated (Rescue 8 responding in place of Rescue 14). They become the second due unit for each other. If both are busy its goes to the next in line, depending on location. Sometimes another squad is closer to a call than the substation is. It all really depends on whos closer and who is actually staffed.

Thanks vavolff. I think I know what you're saying. Sometimes I hear a RS say they are near a street that dispatch is sending another ambulance to. It might be out of their area, but they are closer. They can get there before the other squard even leaves the station.
