Did anyone else notice this morning (3/7/10) that when the fire dispatch on 154.19000 and 153.89000 tones went out, there was no voice afterwards? This happened at least 8 times between 8:00 am and 8:30 am.

So I have three questions:

1. Why does this occur?
2. Was the voice heard on the trunked system dispatch talkgroups?
3. Is this affecting the fire stations?

Guess they fixed it...

Just heard the voices come back on. That was weird.

Anyways...

Still wondering why that occured and if that affected the fire stations in any way?

This happens from time to time.

So I have three questions:

1. Why does this occur?

Normally its a console issue and the audio from the dispatchers headset is not put through to the VHF radio.

2. Was the voice heard on the trunked system dispatch talkgroups?

Normally yes.

3. Is this affecting the fire stations?

Again normally yes, you will sometimes hear them come up on the comm channel and say "we had no voice on dispatch". This is why they have redundant backups for dispatching like a printer in all of the stations, MDT's in the units and text pagers that goes off when they are dispatched to a call.

Its a simple mistake that happens often. On the screen they simply have to click which channel they are going to broadcast on. its easy to select both, one or the other, or none. It should have come over the 800 without a doubt though.

Speaking of the tones, has anyone actually mapped out which tones belong to each station for thr tone out scanners?

Tone mapping

I used to have a PDF file of the dispatch tones and their stations saved on my computer but it got deleted. I know I saved it from on of the threads in this forum so if you start reading some of the fire topic ones you should probably find it.

154.1900 is Sac Metro, Cosumnes (elk grove/galt merger), Wilton, Herald, Courtland, Folsom. Everything in Sac Co, except for Sacramento city.
153.8900 is Sac City

Metro Tones are in the Sac County wiki - but no Sac City
I picked up a 396XT and ARC XT Pro software a couple days ago - I tried to track/document City Fire, but I can't decipher which equipment go to which stations. The City Fire website has a list of all the stations and station numbers, but no comprehensive equipment listing.

I've thrown in my nearby Metro Station and it works like a charm. Pretty cool feature.

Sac City doesnt use tones like the rest of the county, that I'm aware of.

That station near you, does it use DTMF or the 2-tone?

Oh and as for the 'no audio' issue - Two very common main reasons...

#1 Operator error - unselected your channel (btw fire dispatch has two radio trainees right now)

#2 Loose headset connections.

Vast majority of time it's headset equipment. The plantronics equipment I use gets worn out pretty quick. Couplers and cords go out all the time.

#3 Some headsets have mute (or toggle buttons used on training cords/headsets)

I absolute hate getting that dreaded AM on the CAD... "You hear [insert call sign] they're calling you on the radio"

crud.
