LAKEWOOD - Nine people were displaced when an early morning fire destroyed their home. Investigators say the blaze was caused by a candle.
The fire happened Sunday around 2 a.m. on Ellis Way in Lakewood.
Paramedics assisted with minor burns to one of the family members. No firefighters were reported injured.
Firefighters say heavy flames and smoke were coming through the roof as West Metro Firefighters arrived on the scene, so a second alarm was called.
Officials say more than 40 West Metro firefighters worked to bring the fire under control within 22 minutes.
The Red Cross is assisting the family with shelter. The Salvation Army provided food and water for firefighters and the family.
Candle related fires in the home have increased more than 15 percent, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
West Metro firefighters urge the following safety precautions when using candles:
Never leave candles burning unattended.
Always place candles in a sturdy, metal holder that is large enough to catch wax dripping from the candle.
Always place candles on a sturdy surface away from any types of flammable materials such as draperies, bed comforters, etc.
Adults should use candles and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.
Keep candle wicks trimmed to a 1/4 of an inch.
