Doniphan Firefighter Update

Here's an update...

Doniphan firefighter suffers 3rd degree burns
(10/07/2006) By Adam Freeman

We have got new information on a Doniphan fire fighter injured in a fire Friday afternoon. The fire burned 30 acres of corn and took about an hour to put out.

The injured fire fighter is 41-year-old Jimmy Schafer, of Doniphan, who is currently at the Saint Elizabeth Burn Center in Lincoln.

He suffered 3rd degree burns on his chest, arms, and hands in the fire.

“It is all volunteer, just like all these firemen,” said Dan Treat. “He is in our thoughts. That is what everybody is thinking about.”

Saturday afternoon in Doniphan, dozens of fire fighters gathered to show their support for Schafer and his family.

Doin' Better

(10/09/2006) By David Ernst

Doniphan volunteer fireman Jimmy Schafer is improving after suffering burns fighting a field fire a few days ago. Emergency personnel transported Schafer to St. Elizabeth's burn center in Lincoln Friday afternoon.

Officials are not releasing the specifics of his injuries but say he is doing better.

His family's been speaking with the Doniphan fire department to let them know Jimmy's condition.

Doctors upgraded his condition to 80 percent survivability on Saturday.

No one knows how long the recovery time will take, but he is expected to remain in the hospital for at least a couple of months.
