The Department of Homeland Security notified Lamar County on Friday that it had been awarded $551,544 under the federal Assistance To Firefighters grant program.
The money will allow the county's firefighters and emergency management personnel to purchase handheld radios that will not only be compatible with the county's existing 800 megahertz radio system but also the Mississippi state-wide 700 megahertz system.
