I just got my hands on a BCT15X. Bought the usb to serial cable and attempted to update firmware. Except every time I do this I get a communication error. I have done all the instructions multiple times to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Certain USB-to-serial cables are known to be difficult/impossible to use. The ones with FTDI chips seem to work best. The ones that use Prolific chips often tend to be counterfeit and require specific (much earlier) drivers. Alternatively, you can get a Uniden USB-1 cable.

Some PC to cable to radio setups know what com port to use and sometime you have to tell them which one. Like chief21 points out sometimes it’s the chip set.

That is the reason I keep a Windows XP computer going. I have several old radios (over 20 years) and they will only work with a real serial cable and COM port, and a Motorola HT600 that requires a DOS setup because newer processors send data too fast and can fry the radio.

With the cable connected to your computer, look in Windows control panel and in the hardware devices. It should be a section for serial devices where the usb cable should be shown. You can also edit it at that place to change the port number if you need to. Any port number that has a driver installed to it will say that it is taken and cannot be used. You can ignore that warning as long as you do not have any hardware setup to use those com ports. Use the port number in the firmware upgrade program. You should always get a audible indication when you connect the cable to the usb port.

I think you have to set the front port setting in the scanner to either a 56000 or a 115000 speed.

Windows 10 fully supports RS232 serial ports. Many "business" class computers are still available with DB9 serial ports. You can also buy a very inexpensive PCI 2 or 4 port RS232 serial port expansion card for most desktop PC's.

Make sure you are using the cable that came with the scanner that plugs into the port on the front panel. Firmware updates cannot be done using the serial port connector on the back panel. Firmware updates can only be done through the small front panel connector.
