• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Firmware Upgrade Clearing Tuning Settings

I came across this video recommending that you save your tuning file before upgrading your firmware on an APX. The video then recommends that you re-write the tuning file after the upgrade.

I have never done this, and I've never really had any tuning issues. Is something I should have been doing all along? Does upgrading really delete the tuning settings or is it just a precaution?

I've done countless APX firmware upgrades over the past decade from R7 to the current R31, and have never had an issue. I'm sure there was probably a bug in a firmware version at some point that wiped out tuning data, which turned into "ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR TUNING DATA!!1!!!", but to recommend re-writing the tuning data after each firmware upgrade??? Yeah, no. The firmware upgrades take long enough as it is, especially the mobiles.

PS - Just searched the release notes from R1 to R31 and can't find any mention of a firmware bug that wiped out the tuning values. Not saying it never happened, just can't find any reference to it.

This is kinda what I was thinking. I'm not saying its a bad idea to make a backup, but I didn't know if there was any specific reason to do so beyond that.

I know this post is APX-specific, but in previous radio lines there were definitely issues surrounding this. There are also unconventional methods of upgrading/changing firmware that involves software not discussed here that will absolutely clear your tuning values. In my experience if you have to put the radio into Flashzap mode you can kiss the tuning values goodbye. It’s best to just have a copy (you only really need to back them up once) otherwise you will need to take it to a shop or tune it if you ever lose them. No, I have never lost them on my radios doing normal FW upgrades either, but you bet I have them backed up. Why not?
