I got mine today, so far it is good. How do you get it to search and find fire tones. i cant find it in the user guide

Set the A/B tones to 0. WHen a tone is received, it will alert and show them onscreen. You can press E to enter them into a slot, or write them down and do it via software.

Where are the Owner's Manual and the ESN?

I recently ordered and have now received the BCD396XT.
Please note that this is my first new scanner in many years. So I have some concerns.
First, I went to Uniden's website and tried to register my new scanner. It asked for a ESN and I really do not know where I can find that.
Also, I have searched the entire CD that accompanied the scanner and I cannot find the owner's manual. I located a reference guide and a user's guide, but not the owner's manual. I have not been able to find one on the web or at Uniden. I have found the 396t manual. Do you think I can use that for the time being?
Thanks for any assistance. I am hoping to be using this scanner soon.

Observations

Having taken the 330/396 on the same route for years; I am noticing increased and new close calls hits with the XT that I had never received previously.

I'm also receiving VHF frequencies more clearly than I had with the other two radios.

This is with using the same antenna for both items.

Went and monitored a P25 TRS nearby yesterday and didn't see much change between the 396; however, encrypted TG's now pass by without a burp, where previously on the 396 you would get some digital noise before quieting.

Here's a friendly firmware request: allow a user-adjustable ratio of the display (flash) time of the sytem and group names.

Great radio. I'm going to have to do something I don't think I've ever done for a scanner: print the whole user manual and read the darned thing. There is a LOT here.

xt download/upload speed

Does the xt upload and download faster from the computer software than the previous model?

Not really. The port speeds are the same. If anything a few mseconds slower now that the memory capacity has expanded and new functions added (just kidding) :D

The answer is about the same.

Pro96Com on 396XT

I have a nearby P25 system and I tried Pro96Com on it. This is a very neat tool. You just set C-Ch output and use the same com port/cable/settings as you do to load programming. I just wish my local LE system was a P25 system.

The system has to be a true P25 system. Some other system type using P25 digital does not work.

RE: Owner's Manual

The Owner's Manual is the User's Manual.

Owner's Manual is on CD that came with radio. You can also get the User's Manual through the wiki on this site. You'll have to print it out, for it to be on paper.

I understand why Uniden did that, and I'm sure another tree is left standing. But the booklet was kinda nice for easy reference.

To find the checksum, Go to Settings>See Scanner Info>Firmware Version. There's SUM which I took to mean checksum. I entered it when registering mine and it was accepted.

My question about the "Owner's Manual"

There are three different resources that are usually on the CD that's included with the radio. Those resources are the Reference Manual, the User's Guide, and the Owner's Manual. I have the first two for my 396XT but the Owner's Manual was not included.
Likewise, Although I can find the Owner's Manual for most other scanners at Uniden's website, the owner's manual for the bcd396xt has not yet appeared.
Has anyone else who has already received their new 396xt found the Owner's Manual (not the User's Guide and not the Reference Manual) on the CD?
Thank you.

One more stupid ? for this new 396xt, how do you turn Icall off for a edacs system, on the 396 there is a option in the menu but i can find it on this new scanner. having it checked or unchecked in free scan doesnt change it.

Just program the Icall wildcard into a memory spot then lock it out.
Or just keep the radio in ID Scan mode vs. ID Search Mode.

The I-Call Option is no longer available in the Menu. To program I-Call, program a Group and add .i00000 as a Channel. Set a GQK to have the ability to enable or disable.

A long shot, but does anybody know if Fry's will be carrying the BCD396XT anytime soon?

Alright, after reading pretty much of all the good things about this new radio I may consider getting one. The one thing that has Not been mentioned was about battery life. Audio has been improoved, sensitivity was about the same. The problem is that the darn battery runs fast (3-cells-v-4-cells) radio. Maybe it's ok for other users and not a problem, or not? Can someone let us know as it was like the same on the old 396T..
