While the Florida State Law Enforcement Radio System is not monitorable you can watch the activity by using the latest version of UniTrunker.

Was that a question or a statement?

I understand that the Florida SLERS system uses control channels that are encrypted, and as such programs like Unitrunker wouldn't be able to decode them.

If the control channel is encrypted, then how can Unitrunker decode it without the key?

It's not encrypted. It just has a key that prevents unauthorized radios from getting on (affiliating) with the system. The radios traffic itself is digital and encrypted.

That was a statement! Try it out!

I guess I misunderstood the true nature of the control channel. My understanding was that the control channel itself was encrypted, and as such it would be untrackable with any software.

So you're saying you've done this successfully?

I believe it is successful. There's also a variation to ETrunker out there with ESK support.

I believe our webmaster uses that program to watch the San Antonio, TX system. if I am not mistaken.

Yes, That's it ESK. Not only does UniTrunker have ESK support, it also has extended addressing which was the "key" to watching SLERS. Most of the sites have a unique Site ID. Some "I think, don't, and use a Site 0 ID like a regular EDACS"

Forgive me, but I've never used any of the trunker programs. What data does it actually allow you to view? I'm assuming what units are keying up on what TGs and frequencies, right? Anything else?

Doug,

Thanks for the heads up that UniTrunker has been tweaked to decode the FL SLERS. I didn't see this feature added to the UT list of updates and hadn't tried it since the earlier thread in April 07.

A quick check with the new (July 07) UniTrunker running side by side with the older version is showing great results. It's correctly picking up all the peer sites and TGs. I'm going to have fun with this.

Thanks Doug for the post and Rick for the update on Extended Addressing and ESK!

Here's the previous April 07 thread that discussed the problem Doug and I had before.

But with all his money, he can do a lot more than just watch.

The first post in the thread linked below has a good short video showing UniTrunker running on a very active system. A scanner will let you listen to a single talkgroup on a trunked system but a program like UniTrunker will let you see ALL traffic on a system.

The Wiki also has some good info here:

For the benefit of those who don't know, the SLERS system uses ESK, which changes the control channel's data stream just a little. Enough that a non-ESK radio won't be able
to understand the control channel. The CC isn't encrypted, it's just "speaking a different
language", which obviously has been dealt with via means of UniTrunker and the ESK version
of ETrunk as well. But the individual talkgroups ARE full time encrypted, which sucks, of course.

Just wondering how much use are you seeing on Unitrunker on the SLERS system?

By that I mean from radio talkgroups a lot or just a few?

You should contribute any talkgroup and system channel information you can to the database. System info is scarce on the SLERS system.

We may not be able to decode voices, but it'd still be nice to be able to nail down every
last detail of the system's map just "because it's there".

By TG's and Radio ID's I just mean the numbers, not the Uses or Channel assighments.
