No.

That's their Harmony system.

They're 900MHz iDEN radios. It's the same technology that Telus Mobility uses for their MiKE network.

While it isn't encrypted, it uses TDMA technology which allows them to have several conversations on a single carrier (6 to be exact).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Digital_Enhanced_Network for more information.

The short answer is no, they cannot be monitored. The Fleetcom system doesn't have a heck of a lot of users, the majority of the system load is CTV News and the GTAA (LBPIA), so you're really not missing much.

CTV ? Would that include their news chopper too ? I can hear the Global chopper but never the CTV/CFTO chopper.

There are two 900mhz licenses for Fleetcom Inc in the Calgary area.. one for 935.0125, 935.025, 935.0375, 935.05, 935.0625, 935.075, 935.0875, and 935.1; and another for 937.61875, 937.64375, 937.66875, and 937.69375. I've been listening for the first one for months and heard no control channel or audio, and only just now discovered the 2nd one. Is it a safe bet that these are both iDEN as well?

Do you hear any control channel on iDEN? I was under the impression from KB9UKD's digital samples page that there indeed was a control channel to be heard.

Yes, the chopper is on there as well.

The Fleetcom I'm referring to exists only in the GTA. The one in Calgary must be something different, unless Fleetcom messed up their licenses in Ontario. The frequencies that end in .0125 and the like are most likely analog voice repeaters (or trunking), the ones that end in .91875 and such are iDEN.

Years ago, Fleetcom sent equipment for a Harmony site to a Calgary radio shop and they connected it back to Fleetcom's MSO in Toronto via the Internet. That's not how you're supposed to do it (a real T1 is required, but that costs $$$), so it didn't work very well. Audio would get chopped up on the trip there and back due to variable latency and packet loss. It was a typical Raymond Hyde "If I actually knew how this stuff works, I wouldn't waste time and money on this BS" operation. After a few weeks, the site was deleted from the MSO's configuration. If you can't find carriers, it's still a dead site.

All carriers at a site, not just the one carrying the primary control channel timeslot, will be active. Note that they use a full 25kHz per carrier, which some scanners don't like. You may need to turn the squelch all the way down.
