Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner capable of monitoring Fleetnet; however, I do happen to have a VHF portable. I have successfully been able to pick up EMS on Fleetnet using the portable while monitoring frequencies 142.185 142.365 142.5 (Rx only - no Tx); however, having said that, every 5-10 minutes I will get periods of "static" that last for approximately 30-45 seconds.


Any idea what this is caused by or how to get rid of it?

the ontario provincial police also use the Fleetnet radio system. Their trunk talkgroups are digitally modulated, so you won't be able to hear them if you have any old vhf radio. the static your hearing is the digital modulation, the only way to get rid of it is to buy a trunking scanner so you can lock out the digital trunk id's, or if you want to monitor the OPP, you have to spend the money and get an APCO 25 capable scanner that runs about 500- 600$ brand new. if your lucky, you can get one off of the classifieds for approx. 400$. basic trunking scanners don't cost much these days. if you find the durham radio website, and you really want to monitor the EMS, you should pick one up for cheap.

Well, you can't get rid of it, on the scanner you are using. That noise you are hearing
is the p25 digital modulation of the OPP. When you have an analog scanner, all you hear is static noise, such as the scanner you have.

And without A trunk tracking scanner which tracks motorola systems, you are out of luck. The key frequency a scanner needs to pick up is called the Control Channel. Its a allocated frequency, that tells your scanner, which frequency to scan, with an active talkgroup, following conversation, otherwise it will bounce around on any frequency that is active, including the static ones, you hear.

You have 3 options
1. You can listen to what u have already
2 You can get an analog trunk tracker scanner, which follows EMS, MTO, MOH, on fleetnet, but NOT OPP, but your static bursts will be gone.
3. You can get a digital trunk tracking scanner, which will follow all the agencies i mentioned, plus the OPP, little more expensive then option 2
OPP transmission are modulated digitally with a standard called p25. with IMBE vocoders. to encode analog voice to digital transmission. and vice-versa. Look for a scanner that decodes p25 digital. There are different ones, from Uniden, to the radio shack, to GRE.

Also i forgot to mention. You can still pick up mobile repeaters from opp cars, on your current scanner, with no static, thats the only thing that is analog on OPP, is their repeaters. Try punching in 410.8625. But you will only hear this if your are in the vicinity of a couple km's of an opp car.
