Stumbled across this tonight: http://www.virtualtuner.com Go to the ATC section and you can listen in to HF transmissions from over the Atlantic.

Within 30 seconds I heard KLM742 call in to New York and pulled up the FL# on www.flightaware.com. Sure enough, KLM742 was a MD-11 a few hundred miles off the SC coast where I live!

Interesting link .... thanks for posting. I couldn't find a link for NY, though. By your description, I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that it's ARINC NY?

I guess so. Most of what I heard the other night was SSB sounding static. There were a few transmissions that made it through clearly, but most (like talking on a SSB CB radio) was garbled and or too weak to hear.

BTW, FlightAware is one of the most awesome websites I've ever found. I even use it at work in conjunction with our other tracking computers to figure out where and when something is arriving and exactly what traffic is out there. Helped me to find an inbound Life Flight helo the other night that wasn't on our regular flight tracker.

Love the flightaware as I live directly beside a small airport. I69 to be exact.

If you look that one up in flightaware, then look 1 pixel right and up thats my house lol. I see the planes comming and going daily.

But they only seem to use 121.000 for the channel, and I have yet to hear any air to air. Or anything more interesting then the requests for landing and requests for altitude changes.

But I do so love being able to see the incomming flights, thats sweet.

That's the usual around an uncontrolled airport. More of just a safety measure to alert the air traffic of everyone's intentions.

I live exactly 3 miles off of Rwy 3 from Charleston AFB/ International (work there too). I see and HEAR C-17's and C-5's less than 1000 ft over my house every day. Rarely will a C-5 land on 03/21, but when it does, it certainly makes for an interesting few moments. It'll rattle dishes in the sink haha!

Thank God we don't have a wing of B-1's here. We'd never sleep.

Thank god we only get the occasianal jet here, mostly props and helos.

One thing I noticed, In the summer we get a crap load of vintage warfare planes out here, man then mustangs SCREAM over the apartment.

I love it, the neighboors think I am insane, I think I am too.

Did you see the flight of 17 C17's that took off last week? I worked them north of ROA into an IR route.

What are the differences between a C-17 and a C-141? They look fairly similar.

The C-17 is the newest cargo transport in the US inventory. The C-141 is about to be retired. However, the C-5 is still the BIG DADDY of them all!

Those links are informative, but don't provide for any direct comparisons between the C-141 and the C-17. The info on the C-141 is very superficial. Both aircraft are 4-engine, high-wing jets with t-tails. Which is bigger? How can they be distinguished visually?

Yes, they do!!

Click on the specifications for each aircraft. It's all right there.
The C-17 is the larger aircraft with more payload capacity and greater
wingspan. It appears the C-141's engines offers better thrust though.
The C-17 is nearly thirty years newer than the C-141.

There are links there for various pictures of each aircraft as wel!!.

By the way Wright-Patterson AFB has taken delivery of their C-17s. Their last
flying C-141 will return to WPAFB and be placed in the USAF Museum.

Sporty's has a fantastic pilot's shop there with all kinds of goodies.
They are a good place to get sectional charts where you can find all of your local
VHF Aero frequencies. The Flight Guides are good too, I used to get them back in the 90s,
but they got rather expensive to keep up with over the years.
If you haven't strolled over there yet, go check it out.

Here's an inflight picture of a KC-135, C-17 , C-130 and C-141 in formation for size reference -- http://www.airliners.net/open.file/286486/L/

It's my understanding that the 445th AW, the last C-141 operational wing in the Air Force, is converting to C-5s. Is this not the case? http://www.codeonemagazine.com/archives/2005/articles/jul_05/sunrise/

Duh!!!

You're right, I had C-17 on the brain. Yes they are switching to the C-5. I believe
they still have one C-141 flying in Medevac service between Ramstein and Dayton.
When it is finished with it's mission it goes to the Museum.

The C-17 is a lot bigger! The easiest way to distinguish between the two is that the C-17 has winglets. Take a visit to an air show this year and go see one for your self. They’re awesome to see.
