I have yet to find a good tutorial explaining the theory behind QK's

There's a QK for Favorite List, Then System, then Department.

How are you supposed to remember all these digits for 3 levels down in each Favorite list.

I find myself just placing everything in it's own FL and just turning them On/Off via the screen.

It would be nice, that once you turn on a FV, that that favorite list opens up and you can select what systems, then what departments you want on VISUALLY instead of trying to remember FL3 system5 Dept7

I'm sure i'm not the only one having a hard time with this

You can either put the QK in the favorite/system/department name, or use ProScan to print off a cheat sheet.

Or you can use a GPS, Location Control, and Service Types to automate most of the process.

It's been a learning curve for me also. I have 12 flqk's set, and I just use those to turn stuff on and off. I'd like to set 1.1.1 to be my local pd for quick access, but can't seem to get it to work right.

Thanks John,,

But what’s the method to the madness of the numbering system?

Is 1 used for Police, 2 for Fire, 3 for ems?

You can customize FL QKs any way you want to. Myself, I find it much easier to make the QKs corresponding with the Talk Groups I want to hear. I don't deal with sites, systems, channels, and departments. Too confusing and cluttered and too many keystrokes to remember - for me, at least. So I program my FLs with the corresponding number IN the name. In other words, I have my local PD's talkgroups in FL 1...and named (1) Fairborn PD...then the Sheriff Dept Fl with all of the talkgroups in the Sheriff Dept that I want to hear and named (2) Greene County Sheriff...then local fire depts. (3 Fire) etc etc...so mine are all consecutively numbered and listed how I want to get to them..I still use a cheat sheet, but it's not as cumbersome as some, altho I probably have more FLs than the average user, but it works for me.

Have to say I cannot claim credit for this short-cut system, I copied it from another RR member here, PinballWhiz86 (I think!) hoping I didn't get his name wrong. I liked the system, quick and efficient, and I navigate my scanners just like the old way - like banks with channels. Turn one bank (QK) on, turn another bank (QK) off. I have all of my digital scanners programmed this way. Try it, you might like it!

PS: Forgot to mention - and this is important - I import my sites and sytems into 'pools', that I dip into to program my Scan Lists/Favorites List - and just append (assign) the TGs I want to hear from them into my numbered lists.

I listen to mostly the same system 95% of the time. I use a FL QK for each site and that's it for the SDS100. My 436 and 536 are the same. Well my 396 is too..I don't update the master data base ether. I'm always in search mode.. Its my KISS method

It is fun to dink around with and set up just to see if it works.. but when something "happens" that needs full attention I find it difficult to remember quickly what sequences to push..SO.. like you.. I have it with just Favorite List Quick keys.. with 1,2,3 more important and 7 , 8 , and 9 for the less important ones.
It would be helpful if the manual gave this as a suggestion HOWEVER the current manual is light years better than some of Uniden prior ones. My hats off to the tech writers for the manual.

The SDS100 manual was the first manual I've written in nearly 20 years...

Cheat sheets help remember which Q-keys do what

File cabinet analogy:

Favorites List is the file cabinet
_Systems are drawers in the file cabinet
__Departments are file folders in the drawer
___Channels (frequencies/talkgroups) are individual pieces of paper in the file folder

(Scanners are like file rooms - they can have numerous file cabinets in the room)

Favorites List Quick Keys are like locks on the file cabinet
System Quick Keys are like the latch release securing the drawer
Department Quick Keys are like removing/replacing the file folder

Lastly, you can't remove a file folder unless the drawer is open and you can't open a drawer if the file cabinet is locked.

Bottom line/takeaway: Practice, Practice, Practice with Quick keys will help you.

The file cabinet analogy is what made my light bulb go on, so to speak; it's the best explanation I've ever seen.

Practice, learn from your mistakes, more practice, and finally: cheat sheets. That's what worked for me.
It helps if you can develop a system for programming that follows a "protocol". System 3 is aircraft/airport, System 4 is railroad, System 5 is utilities, System 10 is Federal agencies, etc. Every FL I have is set up that way, so if I'm using a list for an area away from home, I know that if I want to monitor the airport, it's SysQK 3. Within that system, Department 0 is approach/departure, Department 1 is tower, Department 2 is ground ops, Departments 11-whatever are airlines; and again, it's the same for every list. Very quickly, it became intuitive.

Wow! That is the best explanation that I have ever heard. I bookmarked this thread for future referrals when folks ask about Quick Keys...
