I'm going away this weekend to Hawaii and wanted to bring my 396 along to see what i can hear while im there. I've never flown with it before and just wondering if they even let things like this past security these days? has anyone else brought theirs while traveling recently??

I carry my 396 with me everytime I fly. I never had a problem clearing security In two years over 30 trips maninly to the US. I have only once been challenged by Canada customs. They wanted me to produce a receipt. I did along with my customs papers as proof of payment from UPS months earlier.

The customs guy suggested I get some card you fill out and list any electronics by description and serial number. A member of Canada Customs verifies items listed and signs it prior to leaving Canada. This is your proof the item was not purchased abroad.

My last trip was a couple of weeks ago. go for it.

Just dont mess with it in the plane. Terminals only. Scanners fall under " no radios that are capable of transmitting and receiving" rule. Check the Database to mabye save yourself some time and program a couple things in for hawaii, you are going on vacation after all.

I visited Nashville last year with a 396, a tapped 245, plus cabling and antennas (Diamond RH77CAs, the longer thinner type), also a laptop and a micro-portable PC, plus a GPS. The only issue was that security at Toronto (which I stopped in both times, enroute from and to Calgary) wanted me to open the backpack and let them inspect the gear. No concerns whatsoever.

I also did the same last year for St. John's, Newfoundland. Again no grief.

From what you say, it shouldn't be a problem if it is placed in your checked baggage. Even carry-on shouldn't be a problem. Have travelled with a 2 way radio [not GMRS/FRS] in carry on baggage and only thing that happened was I had to turn it on to show that it worked [national flights]. Can't comment on International Flights. Should note that there really isn't much to hear when scanning inside an airplane. Scanner shouldn't be any different than laptops or cell phones. GPS units are OK in either checked or carry on. There have been some recent changes in transporting Lithium batteries. To extensive for this thread. Suggest looking at: http://www.tc.gc.ca/aboutus/travel/Pack/menu.htm for more info. and to links as to what can be carried where and how.

The only thing I could think of that will give you major problems is if the scanner wont turn on. So make sure if you are bring a computer controlled unit that you put it in storage luggage. Bring extra batts for your handheld unit. I have brought mobile gps and computers with me before they will ask to turn it on and will "Sniff" it with a bomb brush at check in. You should have no problems. I turned a GPS on in the plane and was not able to get a damn thing even with it pressed to the window. There is nothing your going to get up in the air anyway those planes produce to much EMI.

From what I understand form Jay its nice to have a scanner if you have a stop over or a delay at an airport. Something fun to do while you wait. Have a great time on the island.

If you're comfortable with the concept of your luggage getting lost or an unscrupulous baggage handler "inspecting" your luggage, it's up to you. Me, I have brought my radios in my carry-on every time I've flown.

I second that! I wouldnt leave my camera's, laptop, phones, radio's in my luggage either. Nice and safe in your carry on bag.

Three additional comments (they may have already been mentioned)...

1) Take your receipt of purchase if going through any customs checkpoint
2) Take the manual with you
3) If you have an amateur radio license, pack that too

I put all of these in with the scanner. And put in in the carry-on

Never had an issue flying in US, to/from Canada, to/from Germany, or to/from Japan.

A copy of your favorite radio mag (Pop Comm, Scanning USA, Monitoring Times, QST, etc.) also helps...

I'm a screening officer with CATSA at the Calgary International Airport and there is currently no official rule about bringing scanners along in any baggage, with that being said I have no say in what Canadian or US Customs do with that.
