FM Radio signal strength

I guess this would be the best place to post this...? Was listening to a radio station from New York City 100 miles away in Salem County, NJ and though I was stationary in a car, the station came in consistenty listenable though a bit scratchy. I notice in this general area of the county there are several spots where this station comes in. How is this possible?

That can happen. When atmospheric conditions are right, I can receive a FM station located over 200 miles away.

Whoa!!! I sure hope the wind was not blowing that day.

Anyhow, when tropo opens up here in the great plains, I regularly receive stations out of Kansas City, Des Moines, I even got a catch from KOGA, Ogallala, Ne this past summer, almost 300 miles west of me.

The wind is ALWAYS blowing 1,454 ft over Manhattan NYC, it probably looks a bit more familiar from this angle.

Slightly off topic since FM DX is being discussed, lets try AM.

Lets see, AM DX, Most nights KOA 850, Denver, WCCO 830,MSP, Mn, WBBM 780, Chicago, and KOMA, OKC, Ok 1510, (remember they used to play oldies over AM well into the '90s) dominate my car, home and MW receiver.

I have received KNX 1070, LA and KNCR 680, San Fran on my car radio in the early morning hours. Generally west coast MW DX is difficult, but not impossible in the midwest.

It's the good ol' "Local enhancement", "Tropospheric duct", "E skip", "Meteor refraction", or I guess "Auroral reflections" commonly found on VHF frequencies and is quite fun to listen to when conditions are right. Listen to Florida stations while driving in New York? Sometimes yes!
