OK, so I got my new Pro96 and a copy of Win96, and I'm loving life. I unlocked the traditional FM broadcast range (85-108 Mhz, give or take) and tuned to a few of the local stations to find that they won't come in clearly with any settings I make on the scanner. I know the scanner isn't sold as a "FM broadcast receiver" per se, but I figured it would since my old unlocked Pro34 would do it. Whats the catch? I set the mode to FM, tune directly to a local frequency like 93.10000 Mhz, and I get either "nothing" or choppy audio that sounds like it's been run through some kind of passband filter.

Try the BCD396T

The Bcd396T has the FM as a sevice Search feature
I just got earlier it this week

Anyhow if your not into buying another scanner of that caliber
then
You could always try the 450.00mghz range,...
Sometimes during traffic reports and Rush hours they are active
of course you can buy a FM reciver for less that $15 these days LOL
Anyways,
Regards
Crista

FM Stero

The problem is that some of the older scanners were able to receive WFM (wideband FM)
NFM(narrowband FM) and AM .The newer scanners only receive NFM and AM . That why
the sound is choppy.
Hope this helps,Ray

I understand that, but someone already addressed the 396 above and I was making sure it was clear. No need to get defensive.

Well, I guess I am just a vintage guy. Here it's Dynaco/ Eico/ McIntosh/Packard-Bell depending in what I'm listening to and what I am for FM. Often application for FM is Hi-Fi
rather than stereo. A good Eico/Dynaco/McIntosh is usually all I need, (I grew up with Hi-Fi
and stereo is not a big inprovement for me. Packard-Bell 1961-model, fully restored, is very good for Prairie Home Companion though. Also many APR broadcasts.)

At the shop I run a Dynco mono-block through a pair of JBL 116's with compression tweets for FM and CD's and people are amazed at the sound. Now that's FM and CD!

Never thought of tunning FM on either of my scanners. I guess I always dedicate receivers to bands as I'm just and old fart and vintage-type-guy...

I have a alinco djx10 that picks up FM radio and all TV stations too. I had pro96 I didn't understand why they had the reband on it and no audio? Can't pick it up They shouldn't had that in there since it is dead. Even 700mhz opens up. Doesn't track like the 396 does I hear.

"I had pro96 I didn't understand why they had the reband on it and no audio?"

"They" didn't, Don Starr added it in his Win96 software.

"Doesn't track like the 396 does I hear."

And never will.
