Food For Thought About Encryption

Two of our suburban communities recently went full time encryption. The reason? I found out that several city officials including some police officials about 8 months ago were eating lunch at the local mall. They were surprised to hear not one but three people listening to police communications while eating their lunch by using the apps on their iPhones. Food for thought. No pun intended. IMO these applications will only lead to more encryprion by city officials in the future.

Or, they could just carry a portable radio scanner ; Its just that APPs are more convenient.

Encryptions is for the safety of Law Enforcement officials ( obvious reasons ) , safety of Fire and EMS personnel ( specific topics about a scene , disaster , mass casuality incident )

Encryption has its place for all Public Safety organizations.

FF-Medic is right. I really doubt an agency would spend the money on encryption just because some goobs at the mall food court were listening to scanner audio on their phones.

I used to be of the opinion that Police radio traffic should be open to all to keep Police operations open and public. When operations are done in secret it brings up images of the Gestapo or the KGB. But I believe the technology is getting to the point where real time monitoring of operations is too convenient for people working against the law.

Perhaps making the broadcast available on an internet channel with a time delay is the answer. Putting all operations under a cover of secrecy makes it too easy for abuse by the authorities and mistrust by the people.
