I would appreciate if you could test a Cleveland Center ATC freq., either 133.87 or 133.875 to see if you get BOTH the aircraft, as well as the ATC side of the transmission.

I was told there is an RCAG(remote outlet)located either at MBS or Clare airport and that anyone within, say, 40 miles of this outlet should be able to get both sides of the conversation, not just the(high altitude)aircraft.

Anyway, just wanting to know if that's the case.

Thanks...

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not too familiar with how RCAG works, I take it then all it does is transition lower level traffic(from specific area airports) to Cleveland ATC, but does not extend range.... or have anything to do with the high level(airline) traffic?

I asked the question on another web board about where one would need to be(other than 30,000 feet up)to be able to pick up both ends of the aircraft/ATC communications, specifically for Cleveland Center frequency 133.87, which I listen to for traffic overhead(mostly going to Chicago). Only problem is, only the aircraft comm. is available where I am.

It's basically a repeater for the ARTCC. The Saginaw one is right at MBS and it'll come in loud and clear if you're within about 10 miles of it, depending on your antenna, height, etc. They're usually at airports or high places like mountains.

Try the aircraft monitoring forum, they should be able to give you better answers about the technical aspects over there.

Thanks for the MBS/other info.

So (from your Bay City location) are you able to receive both ATC and aircraft on 133.87....or just the aircraft side? Looking on the aircraft monitoring threads here it appears some are able to listen to the ATC part at some distance from the RCAG location itself, while others not so much. Terrain issues and such I'm sure play a factor....well, at ground level anyway.

(nice website BTW, particularly the MPSCS information, as we in the Lapeer Cty area will be switching soon)

133.87 is NOT on the Saginaw RCAG so it's impossible to listen to both sides of it from your location. It's on another RCAG, I think Detroit. The only frequency on the Saginaw RCAG is 127.7, so delete 133.87 from your scanner and listen to 127.7 instead.

Yes, I've been listening to 127.7 and have been hearing mostly local(lower-level for the most part)transitioning aircraft(aircraft only....no ATC of course...too far away).

According to http://www.freqofnature.com/index.php?m=ARTCC Centers&p=ZOB Cleveland 133.87 is listed for the Saginaw RCAG(High altitude)....unless that's old information.

No big deal, if Ronaldski is not able to pick up the ATC part in his area on 133.87, then it is obviously the case that I was thinking the Saginaw RCAG(or any other RCAG for that matter) is something that it is not.

The Flightaware site is a VERY cool toy. Now I can pretend to be an Air Traffic Controller. ;)

Of all the frequencies listed for MBS, which do you find the most interesting? Gives me something to listen to besides the local public safety traffic when I get bored.

I don't have an outside antenna (yet), and I'm approx. 10. air miles from MBS.

Thx.

As with any airport lot of routine on the approach-departure-tower stuff. For me I'd like to get more info or any other freqs used by the tsa / customs etc. out there.

dont forget though there are two talkgroups on mpscs
MBS Airport 1707 - i hear the fd a lot on it.
MBS Maintenance 1720 also used for runway plows etc.

Ronaldski, you familiar with LiveATC.net?

If so, would you ever consider putting up a feed for MBS(including the RCAG high altitude transitioning traffic frequencies)?

I've thought about doing it myself, but I only get the aircraft side of the communication, I think they(LIveATC)prefer using feeds from those that can get the ATC side as well.

Yes I have heard and looked atc. Nah I wouldnt put one up sorry.

You could do as I put a diamond discone antenna, its on a one story ranch house on a oh ~ 6 foot mast, rg6 cable. Been up for a good 20 years.

No problem,

Yeah I actually had a similar setup to yours a couple of years ago, but found I was located just too far from any RCAG to receive both comm's, at best I just picked up the aircraft a little further out than with my old (attached) base antenna.
