We certainly had ProVoice long before Whistler.

Definitely true, no argument about that. Of course, it's ProVoice. Eh. :D

As I said in another post, I have both Uniden and Whistler scanners so I'm not a "fan boy" of either, as some are (which is fine, if you like just one then that's cool). So I say that to say I look at it objectively...and offering the DMR upgrade free (and via the software right off the bat, no password finding, side-loading and key entering required) for a short list of their latest models, well...in my book that made Whistler rise to the top. Doesn't mean they'll stay there but that's how I see it.

Those who are Uniden fan boys won't see it that way because they're looking through the lens of Uniden love (again, that's cool) but this is how I see it. That's not an insult if you love Uniden, folks.

And I'll say it again - competition is good. While I would never expect Uniden to say so, the Whistler news breaking certainly got Uniden to scrambling faster than they were right before...

The cool thing is the competitors seemed to have a little fun with it, too (the avatars and the titles of threads, etc.). That's competition at its best. And it serves all of us well.

Keep up the good work, Paul.

with shades of the soup nazi, picard, and the spanish inquisition things do drift from radio...

competition is fine. i was a radio shack guy but changed when the 396T covered the milair band and used regular batteries. so i did not buy the pro-96. and the 396T is my carry around everyday radio.

So, I have migrated the Whistler from my private toy closet to the top of my desk. I have it sitting on top of my 996T.

Nothing fancy yet; I only have it connected to power and my outdoor antenna. The antenna needs new connections on each end and its basically lying sideways on top of my back porch roof, which is lower than the rest of the roof. Thats another summer project for sure.

It has been picking up some distant stations. However, when I run my 996T, with a stock antenna, and the Whistler with the roof antenna, I notice that my 996T picks up more Chicago traffic than the Whistler. The 996T was programmed thru BUTEL software; The Whistler is only going by my zip code.

One other thing is that I seem to only be picking up conventional systems. I am wondering why? Any suggestions? Thank you. Greg back to work before the wife notices.

Your experience with the TRX is for a higher purpose.

It's was a learning exercise, but you did not know you were being taught.

Now, show me: Paint the Fence, Wax On, Wax Off.

But you did not see him even discussing the possibility!

Vaporware until it shows up. I own no stock in either company and I have scanners from both companies.

Vaporware is announced software or features that never come into existence.

If UPMan is not even discussing the possibility of NXDN being added on any specific date, then how can you call it "vaporware"?

I'm 100% certain that UPMan and Uniden company execs are very aware that we want to see an NXDN upgrade for the BCDx36 series. So why haven't they said anything? (rhetorical question) Well, since Whistler has announced a free NXDN upgrade in advance for its TRX series, I'd like to think that maybe Uniden is planning to do the same for us as a Christmas gift (for those of us who purchased a DMR or ProVoice upgrade) four months from now.

En canis corpor transmuto , I will not say you are good or bad for doing "Research" , I will use any tool regardless of manufacture to accomplish the task, my parents raised me to be brand loyal ( now a days it gets you a kick in the teeth) and vote with my dollars ( spending money in a bad product) I will wait and not in suspense for a finished product before I sink any money, now I 'm off to finger my latest victim the 710 g, so far a great rig , but I have not began to break it yet.

Whistler chose the promise of NXDN as a launchpad for their brand new scanners.

I would guess Uniden is weighing (or has weighed) its options:

1. Develop a PAID NXDN upgrade for its existing x36 scanners.(Maybe get NXDN out before Whistler does.)

2. Develop new scanners and sell all digital modes individually (NXDN would only be available on these new models but you only buy the modes you want)

3. Develop new scanners with NXDN along with ProVoice and DMR already on board.

If it is a new scanner, they could even look at solving the LSM conundrum, which could put them over the top.

I can't imagine how someone could think a TRX-2 felt cheaper than a 536. Neither of them are commercial like quality, but the 536 reeks of cheap much more than any digital GRE/Whistler radio does.

Any nuns with bad habits? :)

When I look back, it was the Nuns from that first day of school that gave us a rigorous, but very high quality education. If you didn't want to learn, they beat it into you, but learn you would. :)

You say that like it's a bad thing? LOL I know, I know...

Today you get to pull out a pink card when you "just can't take it anymore" and be sent to your "safe space"...
