Former Vice President Mike Pence will speak at a free event at UNC Chapel Hill in the Carolina Union Great Hal at 7 pm tonight (4/26).

News media is reporting protests are planned before the event. Expect traffic delays around campus.

There will probably be an escort from RDU to UNC, however I do not believe Pence continues to get Secret Service protection any longer. I would think SHP and Orange County and Chapel Hill Police may assist with this visit. Among the UNC VIPER talkgroups that may be active are the following:

Two protestors who rushed the stage during Joe Biden’s remarks on Super Tuesday prompted a flurry of questions about whether the former vice president has protection from the U.S. Secret Service.

The answer is no.

As a former vice president, Biden was entitled to Secret Service protection for up to six months after the date he left office. Though the Department of Homeland Security can extend that window, it did not do so in Biden’s case.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond.

“Major” presidential and vice presidential candidates automatically receive the protection within 120 days of the general election under the law. But in practice, many candidates receive it much earlier in the campaign cycle. The decision is not made by the Secret Service itself, but rather the DHS secretary, in consultation with congressional leaders.

H.R.368 - Protecting Vice Presidents Act

It was first introduced in 2011. That version passed the House, and the Senate eventually becoming law. But Secret Service protection was only good for six months.: H.R. 368 | Congressional Chronicle | C-SPAN.org

It was introduced again two weeks after the attack on 1/6/2021: HR368 | US Congress 2021-2022 | Protecting Vice Presidents Act | TrackBill

It looks like it stalled.
