Ft. Collins Mayday | 5280FIRE
09/22 ~ At 00:46 Fort Collins 911 received a report of smoke coming from a building in the area of 1888 East Mulberry Avenue. The RP reported didn’t know the address but reported an electrical burning odor and visible smoke from a garage door and vents of a mechanical shop. While en-route, Engine 6 reported smoke showing and requested a fourth Engine Co. emergent. Engine 6 arrived at 1943 East Lincoln Avenue and sized up a medium size, one story commercial building with light smoke showing from the roof line on the C/D corner and declared the Lincoln Side as the Alpha Side. During a 360 heavy pressurized smoke was showing from the delta side roof and high heat signatures were visible from the end unit with a thermal-imager. Battalion Chief 1 assumed command and confirmed an offensive strategy with E6 advancing a 1 3/4 line into the fire unit & T1 assisting with forcible entry. Engine 1 established a water supply, laid into Engine 6 and was assigned to pull a back up line to the door. The crew from Engine 12 established a “2 out” line and Ladder 5 was assigned as Support to assist with entry and secure utilities. A short time after making entry Engine 6 & Tower 1 found a working vehicle fire with heavy smoke and no visibility inside. The fire was quickly knocked down but magnesium made it difficult to fully extinguish. Support requested an additional unit to assist them and the crew from Engine 10 was re-designated as RIC 10. Interior crews found high heat in the wall separating the fire unit from the Bravo 1 exposure and Engine 1 advanced a line inside to check for extension. Tower 1 conducted primary searches and an all clear on the entire structure was declared by command. Crew recycles began and Engine 3 was positioned on side charlie to assist with scene lighting.
Dispatch called Engine 1 on the Larimer County Mayday channel and advised they had received an emergency activation. Engine 1 verified the activation and reported a firefighter had fallen through the 2nd story to the 1st story in the bravo unit and was unconscious. Command acknowledged the mayday and Engine 1 advised that a large amount of wood needed to be removed to access the injured firefighter. RIC 10 made entry through the charlie side to assist with rescue. Ladder 5 quickly located and removed the injured Firefighter who was immediately treated by Poudre Valley Ambulance 252. An additional medic unit was requested and a PAR was conducted. After the PAR command reassigned companies to continue with needed tasks. No fire extension was found beyond the fire unit. It was reported that there was no second floor and that firefighters had fallen from a loft that did not have a railing. One of the firefighters was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies with minor injuries and the other was treated and released at the scene. Investigators are working at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
