Boy, will there ever be a difference in noise level! A-10's sound like airliners while F-16's with afterburners are extremely loud.

Sorry to see the A-10s go.

We have A-10s here right next to me in Maryland with our ANG. I know the Air Force wants to do away with these aircraft.

Big mistake. No other aircraft of human design does what the A10 does, as well as it does, survives as much damage as it does allowing the pilots to come home unscathed while being as relatively inexpensive to keep in the air. And when the guys on the ground see them overhead they know their chances of making it back to base just got a lot higher.

I agree Jhooten, but the Air Force says the A-10 is too slow to survive a modern air battle. A few in Congress have saved it a few times.

We have had A-10s as long as I remember here in the Maryland ANG and I am 54.

Back in the 70s Stars and Stripes had a cover photo of an A10 spooling up on the Rhein-Main runway with a "tornado" of water being sucked of the surface into each engine. That was our official introduction to the new aircraft that was intended to make the Soviets think twice about rolling tanks over the border.

Oh, and it cracks me up that on one hand "they" are saying the A10 is to slow to survive the modern battle field so we will replace it with a Super Tucano.

I miss having them here in Battle Creek. My house is just the right distance from the airport that they would fly directly overhead on their downwind. Love the sound of those engines!

If the military wouldn't have added missiles to the plane that added allot of weight, it could still be used for close combat roles. But no, the geniuses at the pentagon had to add crap that wasn't designed to carry missiles. That gatling gun is a bad ass weapon.

Well, missiles are a primary anti armor weapons platform now. Its the main weapon on any tank killing aircraft. Unfortunately the Hellfires aren't suitable for an aircraft like the A-10, so they had to go with another option. Now the DOUBLE autocannons are even more badass on the newest version of the A-10... Double the brrrrtttt... Now if they had an Spooky with all BRRRRTTTs... That would be even scarier lol.
