It seems that the forum is slowing down again. I hate to complain about that since Lindsay is a busy person but I think it needs to be addressed.

There is more going on under the hood, so to speak, than what meets the eye when talking about if a web site is "slow" or not.

While a slow website could be attributed to a server that is overworked, it can also be the Internet itself that is at fault. One simple way to determine this is by running traceroute (unix) or tracert (windows). Here is how rr.com looks from my perspective:
C:\>tracert -d www.radioreference.com

Tracing route to www.radioreference.com [72.3.135.37]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 14 ms 10 ms 14 ms 255.255.255.255
2 14 ms 12 ms 10 ms 68.12.8.49
3 10 ms 12 ms 10 ms 68.12.14.13
4 13 ms 12 ms 10 ms 68.1.0.108
5 16 ms 13 ms 13 ms 68.1.0.120
6 20 ms 19 ms 18 ms 68.1.0.107
7 22 ms 20 ms 17 ms 68.1.0.157
8 18 ms 18 ms 34 ms 68.105.30.10
9 18 ms 15 ms 17 ms 151.164.41.155
10 19 ms 20 ms 19 ms 151.164.240.226
11 17 ms 16 ms 17 ms 151.164.40.78
12 23 ms 21 ms 17 ms 66.142.240.126
13 22 ms 18 ms 25 ms 72.3.128.21
14 22 ms 18 ms 18 ms 72.3.129.3
15 17 ms 21 ms 18 ms 72.3.135.37

Trace complete.
So it took 15 hops to make all the way through the Internet to rr.com. Every single hop is a router somewhere at some ISP along the way. And with the hops being in around 20ms or so, that is pretty darn fast.

Should any single one of these routers become swamped with traffic .. the website that you are trying to reach will appear only to you to be slow. You will also see the time per hop jump dramactially to 100 or 200ms.

Granted, this does not gague server load, but it does gague the load of the Internet from your perspective.

Good for you but that has nothing to do with the problem that the site was having.
