This is not setting a good example.

Via www.local12.com (WKRC-TV Cincinnati):
-----
The Sheriff for Franklin County, Indiana spent time behind bars overnight, after he was arrested on a drunk driving charge.
One of Sheriff Dale Maxie's Deputies stopped him at Laurel road and State Route 1, just outside of Brookville Indiana,
about 9 o'clock Friday night.

Sheriff Maxie had crossed the center line and failed to use his signal during a turn.
When the Deputy realized he'd pulled over the Sheriff, he called in the Indiana State Police.

Troopers arrested Sheriff Maxie and charged him with operating while intoxicated.
Maxie posted bond is out of jail.Franklin County Sheriff's Office tells Local 12 the Sheriff is on leave.

He was arrested... most places would have packed him off in the deputy car and called a county tow to bring the sheriff's car home. And nothing would have been said. And it is done this way in too many places in the country. I'll bet the radio traffic was interesting.

Of course the deputy probably no longer has a job...

Hmm...Is there an election coming up? Is somebody trying to make the sheriff look back so he won't get re-elected? Is the arresting deputy's buddy running against the incumbent sheriff?

Heck, this incident is nothing compared to what went on in Kentucky while I was living down there. In Pulaski County, the incumbent sheriff was shot sniper-style by a guy working for one of the challengers in the election. In Bell County, a challenger to the incumbent sheriff was found shot to death in his car.

Since the county sheriff in many midwestern states is also the collector of delinquent property taxes, it's an important and lucrative job that people take seriously. Way too seriously, in some cases.

Here it is nothing for a Sheriff to earn $100,000 plus as they get "bonus's" for cutting costs on things like jail food and so forth, which explains why jail food gets the rap it does. I remember about 5 years ago the sheriff here made $175,000 so someone busting the sheriff and making them look bad doesn't surprise me a bit with those $$$ on the line. The Sheriff in this case should know better though, and I am sure if he'd have called one of his buddies he could have gotten a ride home.
I was working dispatch one night when a trooper got stopped by one of our officers for DUI and as it turned out he almost lost his pension, but got luck and rode a desk for his last 6 months before retirement. On another brainiack move an officer from a neighboring town was in a accident and he was arrested for DUI and wound up fired with just 8 months to go before retirement..... no one liked him, he was one of those grumpy old know-it-alls who was wrong more times than not. I had a run in or two with him on fire calls and didn't feel sorry for him when he got canned.

If so, the deputy better hope and pray that his buddy wins!

This deputy must live in the twilight zone. Typically, when you have a radio number higher then 1, you don't assist with the arrest of the guy who is car 1. Especially if you both wear the same uniform. This idealistic outlook is nice in fantasy land, but in the real world, cops backstab each other. After this is all over, that Sheriff will still be the Sheriff and this guy will be a night shift wagon driver with IA scrutinizing everything he does looking looking to fire him.
Rmember when Jeremy Rogalski did a story on Jack Cottey leaving bars driving county owned cars while possibly intoxicated? Within 30 days, Mr. Rogalski was sitting in the county lockup charged with DWI because Cottey but a team on him to follow him everywhere he went, and after work one night, he went to the bar. Of coures it's not right, but that's real life.

You would think if the deputy wanted the boss that bad he would have had a buddy or two from ISP do the stop while he was home or out of state on vacation!
