Greetings,
Is there any free programming software that supports the Pro164?
I've looked but can't seem to find anything. Mostly want something
to back up what I've programmed by hand.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,

There is, sadly, no free lunch insofar as software for the 164. However, most of the packages have a 30 day trial, and that should be enough, along with a premium sub so you can download data from our database, to get the job done

Hmm. Interesting that you paid for your "amateur radio call sign" displayed in your signature bloc but you are surprised that soft ware is not "free"? Just saying ....

I didn't pay for my callsign to be displayed, as far as software radio shack is the only one I'd have to pay for simple software to create a backup for firmware upgrades etc. that would erase the memory. Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom, Uniden etc. seem that I can backup the memory onto a pc. If I have to buy something for radio shack it's not that big a deal, just wondering about freeware that's all,
Thanks,

According to the description, it's a backup/restore utility. Yes you could use it for programming using someone else's backup, but you can't do any editing of the source....Mike

Sorry, my info (before the FCC web site went dark) was that your amateur radio call sign was a "Vanity" call purchased from the FCC for some reason personal to you. I was observing that you PAID for your call instead of accepting the one assigned by the FCC but you were searching for FREE software. Somehow that struck me as strange but no matter. It's not pertinent to this thread and I am sorry if it distracted from your search. As the sign on the bar used to say, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Based on this statement PSR300DL should work perfectly, if it behaves anything like PSR500DL. It will create a .bin file of what is read from his scanner and will restore that .bin file.

lep, my mistake, I thought you implied my call sign displayed here was paid for, like a premium subscriber. You're right that I paid extra for the vanity call sign, it uses my initals. I don' t have a problem buying software if it's somethimg I really need but I only need to back up the programming I did by hand. I make it a point to know how to program all my radios without software in case I'm out in the field without access to a pc.
blangell, I'll look into the psr300dl...thanks for the tip.
Actually the programming cable came with a 7 day trial of butel software so I was able to back up my programming and update the firmware and dump it back in...and I doubt there's going to be anymore firmware updates since the scanner is discontinued.
Thanks to everyone for the help

There are a lot of freeware options as well as free trials try bc tools or chirp and see if those might help

CHIRP is only for amateur radios, while bctool is programming software for the Uniden DMA scanners. The PRO-164 doesn't fall into either category. The WIN packages are not freeware (although Win97 would work with this radio)

There are a couple of cross references for things like this in our wiki, specifically...

Popular Software for RS Scanners - the RR Wiki

which are pretty comprehensive. Note the link for the PSR-300 article - which handles the PRO-154 as well, as noted in the table

Making poor recommendations like this is very misleading to a newcomer. Mike
