How does fire dept. alerting work in Freeborn County? There pager test is two tones over and over.. When someone gets a call it is the same tone for every city.. How does this work?

There is only one tower listed so it shouldnt have to do with CTCSS Tones...

Thanks for any help!

The tones that actually page out the FD and the CTCSS tones are two different things. The two tones that you hear are what actually activate the pagers and are audible. You cant hear the CTCSS tones. For the fire department the dispatch transmits two tones which activate the pagers the FD people carry.

Yes, I know that.... There are two tones. Two seperate sets of tones.. They go back and forth at least 10 times in a pager test.. There are at most 10 fire departments in the county... I'm looking to know how each fire dept. individually has there pagers alert when there are only two seperate tones...

For example.. you will hear a tone something like 1205.0 / 718.0 Hz... You'll hear "Attention Geneva Fire Rescue" or some other town..

Five minutes later you'll hear the same tone (1205.0 / 718.0 Hz) but then you'll hear "Attention Hartland Fire Rescue" or some other town..

How can they do this??

Have you confirmed with a scanner or software that those are indeed the tones and you're not just going by ear? Because some tones can be different but sounds really similar.

They may have the same tone because of mutual aid agreements with other rural departments.

If they all have a common A or B tone then the dispatch could do a all call page to all the departments. Or was just set up for ease of the radio shop.
