Got a fair copy of FREEDOM STAR on 10780khz at 0850z on 5/16/2011.

The changed channels to 9270khz because of conditions. I didn't hear the other callsign but I'm presuming this for the SRB recovery operations.

Picked it up on USB, 9270 at 13:10z. They just radioed in the location of #1 and #2.
Male voice giving range and heading and then a very faint female voice confirming.

Thanks for the info. Like most scanner situations it is mostly quiet and then you might
get some great info

Glad to see that the frequency was in use. I missed the first number and was searching from 6270, 7270, 8270 and then 9270 and caught the tail end of the confirmation. Persistence pays off.

Wow you were able to hear the recovery ships from Seattle? Man that was a really good catch! I was searching the bands but could not find the freq they were working until I read your post.Good Job!!! They were weak but readable here in RI. The best part of the day was catching the tail end of shuttle comms during MECO. That was a first for me.

I wasn't up early this morning so I missed the morning comms but the sunspot activity has really helped the propagation at night.

If it wasn't for some RFI on 10780 I would have heard FREEDOM STAR better. He was fairly weak. The other station on 9270 was fine - probably S7.

I know what you mean though -- in the past, I never have had much luck with space shuttle comms of any kind. Back then, I was using horizontal wires.

Moving to a (really good) vertical antenna (and a much better radio) may have helped. :D

Icom 7600 with Zero Five 10-40 GP Vertical.

I previously was using my Icom IC-7000 with 300ft longwire.
