NEWS FROM THE COLORADO STATE PATROL
DATE: 4-2-08
TIME: 7:25 P.M.
LOCATION: Highway 50 at milepost 231 in Fremont County. (Approximately 3 miles west of Howard, CO.) On 4-2-08 at approximately 8:49 A.M. Troopers responded to highway 50 at milepost 231 near Howard, CO.
A white 1998 Freightliner truck tractor pulling a semi flat-bed trailer loaded with 1,200 20 lbs. cylinder canisters filled with propane was traveling westbound on Highway 50. The vehicle failed to negotiate a left hand curve and went off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle rolled
1/4 time onto its right side and slid to its final rest. During the sequence of the rollover the load shifted and approximately half of the containers were released from the trailer. A portion of the cylinders rolled down an embankment and some cylinders entered into the Arkansas River.
The current amount of cylinders that entered into the river are unknown.
The current amount of cylinders that have ruptured are also unknown at this time.
The Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Materials Team is currently on the scene for the containment process and conducting a complete and thorough investigation.
Highway 50 is currently closed to all persons and the motoring public to ensure a safe and secure environment.
The Colorado State Patrol has notified and is actively working with the following agencies:
Canon City Water
The Coast Guard
Arkansas Headwater Recreation in Salida
The Environmental Protection Agency
The Colorado Division of Wildlife
The restrained driver of the Freightliner has been identified as Ron Funk, 60 of Frederick, CO. Funk did not sustain any injuries.
Mr. Funk has been cited for Careless Driving.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as contributing factors, however speed may have contributed.
This incident is still under investigation.
