Any body here know about where the band with for radio collars use on mtn lions or other wild animals?
I live near Los Padres forest in Fillmore CA
I know they are low power and could use a yagi antenna.
This is just for fun.
I am thinking they are about 170. mhz.
Any thoughts?

Thank you FXDSCON.
I have a three day weekend to work on this.

I so far did not see that in the FCC.

Wildlife tracking falls under Part 90.
1mW for airborne wildlife
10mW for terrestrial wildlife
They usually have small batteries, so low power is necessary to get any usable lifespan out of them.

There's also some telemetry stuff in the 173MHz range that may apply:

Some consumer dog trackers (Garmin) use MURS.

There's quite a bit of stuff around 216MHz that falls under Part 95.

Some of the stuff in the link above W4TZ shows rules that fall under the 'experimental' catagory.

Also, Federal users operate under a completely set of rules governed by the NTIA, not the FCC.

Not uncommon to see old wildlife tracking stuff for sale on E-bay.

I think there is even some stuff that uses satellite, now.

216-220MHz is where I'd look. We used to use 217MHz CW for foxhounds, many moons ago. That got really interesting with a few hundred collars going at any given time in a competition environment.

Some tracking may be cellular as well. My pups collar uses an At&T sim card to upload the GPS and for me to send some commands to activate different features of the collar as needed.
