I think you should be even more specific - what would you like to measure, what / how many inputs do you need, does it require high accuracy etc. etc.

Even more important, how much do you have to spend?

Can anyone recommend a frequency counter that covers the rf spectrum?

I use an OptoElectronics Scout 40 portable freq counter with 400 memories and hit counters. Works well with a ham vhf/uhf dual band rubber duck. Its a little pricey but you know the old saying that you get what you pay for.....

I use OptoElectronics M1. I used it for racing mostly. It does the job very well. But like fineshot1 said it's kinda pricey. Spent close to 500 dollars for mine. But very happy that I have it.

Considering that most people on this site are scanner owners/listeners; I think it is only appropriate to mention that the Signal Stalker (II) feature of the PRO-97 scanner is essentially a frequency counter. Now if you are tweaking the local oscillators of receivers it is not what you want, but if you're tring to measure something being broadcast it might fit the bill better than some traditional model. Price .. $200 normally, $150 on sale or even less used.

A great portable FC is the two that used to be offered by Radio Shack. The model numbers are 22-305, 22-306. They go way low and then up to 1.2ghz. I've had both of them and they work great. Nicely made. Not sure who the original manufacturer was. They are on eBay weekly and usually sell for only $50-70 bucks. Beaver Stamp of Approval.
