I am relatively new to the scanning hobby and I have a basic question that perhaps someone can answer for me. Is there a way to tell whether or not a frequency is 'trucked' or 'conventional' by simply looking at that frequency number?

Welcome to the hobby. If you mean the actual frequency itself, like 155.7000 or 860.2375 then no. If you mean when you look up the frequency in the FCC data base, then a qualified yes. Indeed the two frequencies I used as examples are used both as trunked and conventional as can be found in our database.

When looking in the FCC database (or in our download of it) you will see Radio Service designation. That will tell you how the frequency is licensed by the FCC for that entity. Take a look at WPWF333 and you will see that 155.7000 is licensed as a trunked frequency (YW: Public Safety Pool, Trunked) on the South Dakota statewide TRS. And yet it is a common Public Safety conventional frequency, indeed Louisiana has several parishes that use it for public safety.

Hope that answers the question for you.
