When I search frequencies on the RR Database under the FCC search, I come up with more frequencies than I do with the licensee search. Can anyone explain exactly what the difference is in the two searches and why the licensee search always comes up with less frequencies? When searching, which one is more accurate to follow? Also, if you find more than one service on a frequency, do you identify your most local service with the alpha tag?

There are several places in the RRDB to conduct a search. :) Where exactly are you doing yours at?

When searching, which one is more accurate to follow?
Some sites that provide FCC information give you the whole ball of wax. These frequencies may or may not be in use. That is where the RRDB differs. Its main thrust is to provide "verified" frequencies first, and basic FCC information second.

This is where you can help out. :) If, while you are scanning and discover a PL tone being used, or know of some other tidbit of information, submit it so that others can benefit.
Also, if you find more than one service on a frequency, do you identify your most local service with the alpha tag?
Usually, there will only be one service on a frequency. If there is more than one, they might be seperated by PL tones. The only other explaination for more than one service on a frequency would be a trunked system.

I am mainly searching CT frequencies. Are you saying that the frequencies that show up in the FCC search may not be in use? If I discover frequencies under the FCC search that are being used, I will forward the information on to this website.

Umm, what are CT frequencies?

I am also confused by your question. If you are talking about just the data from the FCC (either what is on this site or the FCC site) the FCC has no idea if the frequency licensed is being used. As a matter of fact they have no idea if an unlicesned frequency is being used.

I understand it now. I should really just search the licensee frequencies as those have been verified in use. I'm searching Connecticut frequencies and sometimes discover frequencies on the FCC side of this website where I am receiving signals. I will pass that information on to this website if I discover such frequencies.

DUH! CT = Connecticut

Of course it would have been easy to figure out if you had a location in your profile.

Has anyone using this website ever used or subscribed to the National Radio Data website and if you have used it, how do you like it? It seems to be a very detailed website regarding frequency searches but comes along with a fee.

To compare the two, radioreference.com and National Radio Data, you basically get the same identical information because it all comes from the FCC to begin with. The difference is that the morons at National Radio Data want to charge you a fee for access. As you know, rr.com is free! :)

Plus, rr.com's RRDB is continually being updated by everybody so that the most correct information is presented.

Yeah, you've got the ideal of what this site is about now.
I will pass that information on to this website if I discover such frequencies.
Cool. That is what it is all about! :)

I might add that even though this website is free, it does cost money to maintain and some feel like expressing gratitude via a small donation to the webmaster.

One more item that may not be so obivous ..

If you go to CT page (that's CT as in C-o-n-n-e-c-t-i-c-u-t for loumag :)) in the RRDB and click on the New Haven county, down at the very bottom are two links.

One says: "Display Unidentified FCC Licenses for County: New Haven" This gives you all of the frequecies that we know about that should be active in New Haven county, but nobody has ID'd them yet.

and the other says: "Display All FCC Licenses in New Haven County (Slow)" This show everything from the FCC that has a transmitter in New Haven County.

The RRDB is centered around Public Safety information first, commerical secondary, and a limited number of tertiary frequencies last. What this means for you is that if you are trying to find a frequency for Farmer Joe, your most likely not going to see it listed in the RRDB unless you search on the FCC side of the house.

Thanks a bunch for the information you have provided regarding using this website properly. After explaining some of the benefits of frequency searching, I realize that this website is a great and powerful resource if understood and used properly. Although this site is free, I will shortly be making a contribution to the site to express my gratitude for all the hard work that the administrators and contributors of this site lend to this site and will definitely use it for valuable scanning information.

I live in Connecticut and have been searching the 810.00 to 823.00 frequency range and have come up with no signals. Does anyone know if these frequencies are active in this range in this area?

These would normally be the inputs for repeaters on 855.00 to 868.00

On a similar note, I used a search-tool on another website which I cannot remember any more. It was NOT the FCC, ULS, wireless2, etc. site. It provided what seemed to be much more or at least different information.
I am specifically looking for information about a license which I know to be expired, so I can work on renewing, or changing it's ownerhip.

Anyone know any other license search tools I might try? I've spent a ton of time and am going nowhere....

when you search the 810 to 820 all you know is there are no lowpower portables, mobiles or control stations near you. It is best to spend your search time from 851 up.

this site provided me EXACTLY what I needed, even better than the site I was thinking of. I want to use a channel, and I keep getting told NO by the expired licensee, so I guess they can't tell me no. I'll just get it for myself. Pity public safety agencies can't play better together, huh?

I appreciate the quick, and VERY HELPFUL reply.
