So I have had the BCD396T for about two weeks and have read the manual about 50 times. I am no further ahead with programing. I went from my grandfathers crystal scanner to this and I am still stuck in the the stone age. Is there an Idiots "how too" guide anywhere? All the systems in my area are trunking(Chicago) So I have been having the chance to listen to squat!!!

All guidance would be appreciated!

Thank You,
Chris

First off, you need to subscribe to RR (pay for the database) then you need to get the ARC software. Get the pro version of it. There is a feature that allows you to download systems directly from RR database. This will get you up and running pretty quickly.

The software is available at Butel.com and you can subscribe to RR through this site. I suggest if you get the software you also download the manual. Between the software the database you should be in good shape.

Not exactly, but this is indexed and may help you. Easier to Read BR330T/BCD396T/UBCD396T Manual
I fully agree. you should definitely get software. This will not only make your programming much easier, but it will help you understand all of the features of the 396. Here is a list of software: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/BC396T#Supporting_Software Three that provide the most value are ARC396 by BuTel, and free programs, FreeSCAN and BCtool. They allow a automatic download of any or all frequencies in your county and state from this site, and sets up trunking TGID's & para's(this is a big help). They have a neat virtual control panel that works your scanner from the keyboard., but the best part is that it logs all the information(freq & PL) and lets you see your scanner window in a much larger scale that you can actually see clearly. The logging is great when searching, but it is also handy for normal scanning. Often, I do not look up in time to see what agency was just talking, so I just look at the log. You can download all three and see which one you like(ARC free demo has some limitations, but it is robust)

Also, if you have a new PC or lap top, you will need a serial to USB converter from Uniden http://tinyurl.com/2cqyu4 or Radio Shack: http://tinyurl.com/2gpbsp . Another source is http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10311&cs_id=1031104&p_id=2276&seq=1&format=2, for quite a bit less. It is reported to work.

Note: You would need to become a paid subscriber to this site to get the automatic down loads, but this is also very reasonable($7.5 for 3 months). This can save you countless hours of programming and frustration. Since you are in Chicago, you will need to know something about Trunking Basics and Trunking Systems Things have changed a lot, Rip Van Winkle, but software has stepped in to make the transition less traumatic ,

I got the usb converter I downloaded the freescan program on friday spent the holiday weekend trying to program. I had no problems with conventional, but its this trunking deal! I don't understand the systems. My state police use Starcom21 My city police use "ancient motorola type II". I tried to load the city one using mot 1, then mot 2, then edacs and then ltr but the freqs list I am using was updated back in 06, hell for all I know they probably all have nextels now!

Ok, well the automatic download would set up all the current trunking freq's and TGID's, and should be fairly straight forward with FreeScan. If you don't want to use the auto download, at least go to the Chicago area link and look at all the latest info for your area. Do not use outdated lists! If you still do not know what to do, then tell us your exact county and city police, etc. Update, StarCom21 - Illinois -- 700/800 MHz (Statewide P25) is very complicated in terms of sites and System Talkgroups. You will need to decide which sites are in your general area(probably 20 mile radius..you can always add more later to see if your range is better). I think the 396 has to load each site as a separate system with the appropriate TGID's, so you will need to do one at a time with the software. You may need some advice from the folks in the IL forum.

I would definitely go to the Illinois forum with questions like this...even better, the CARMA folks (a very good scanner club in the Chicago area) may already have files you can import (FreeScan can import UASD files directly...). They have their own Yahoo group as well - I believe it's called carmachicago.

By the way, if you have the original 1.13.17 firmware in the 396, BCTool will likely work somewhat better than FreeScan. For some reason, FreeScan no longer allows you to adjust the P25 parameters, expecting folks to upgrade to the version 2 firmware for the scanner. I have argued that newcomers wouldn't either know about or be comfortable with doing this right off the bat, to no avail. BCTool allows for this.
FreeScan is supposed to have another release shortly; perhaps Assaf will relent and put the P25 adjustments back - if enough folks squawk about it to him. FreeScan has its own forums right on the webpage.

[edit] Yep that's what it's called - and there's even a Starcom21 devoted Yahoo group. Also listed here is the website for BCTool. I ran it on and off yesterday with my 396 with very few issues. It seems pretty stable, frankly. Make sure you get the beta version.

Thank You!

I just have a lot of catching up to do tech wise. Thank you all for your input. I have already received an updated trunk list for chicago from CARMA. Going to do some playing around with the FreeScan download. My scanner shows that it has been updated. I was loading everything on freq or talk group id at a time. Did not realize it could pull all the info from the Excel Tables at once!

Once again thank you so much!

So I did the membership and it was night and day! I picked what I wanted to hear, plugged in my radio and was off and listening.

Thanks Everyone!
