I've just seen the GMRS thread locked by Mike...and I guess I can't blame him for doing so. Yikes, I hope we don't have too many more of these!

Anyway, if the discussion about FRS and/or GMRS goes too far away from the scanning aspect, try the site below, but don't expect the moderators to be pushovers. There's always somewhere to talk about whatever you want.

I'm glad he did too, it did get out of hand. All I was trying to say is that people are going to modifying gmrs/frs radio's no matter what rules and laws are out there.
When I was in my teens and having the cb bug, I had to go get that HR2510, If you guys no what I mean. I knew I was transmitting out of bands but it was the cool thing to do talking to people around the world with 4 watts (legal) but out of band (Illegal) Thats what I was trying to get too.

As n-jay said there is other places to experiment with like the amature bands, but not all people have there ham license so they will try different things elsewhere, and it will happen that people will want more range (not out of band) but with external antennas and such (illegal).

Anyways, I hope it did not freak people out

Yes, I agree that people will always play on the edges of legality, especially if they don't understand the logic behind the rules.

That is why the rules often have to be written to intentionally make it hard to break (i.e. non-removable antennas)

What I don't understand is this "It's not to bad because it is 1/2 legal" thinking.

If you are OUT OF BAND, then you are IN ANOTHER BAND, and as such subject to THOSE RULES. 4 Watts is just as illegal OUT OF band as 450 Watts is. The rule you are breaking is the legality of transmission in that band, it could be a ham band, and therefor you are trasnmitting qwithout a license. It could be a government band and you might be interfering with public safety or military communications. Just because you are using the power level LEGAL in the band YOU CAME FROM is completly irrelevent.

I dont know about you guys ,but I am not going out and buying crap from future shop , canadian tire or wallmart . I have had some old motorola and general electric 2-way portables around for a long time. with the price of a license from the DOC who can afford that. now with the new legislation out I have them turned down to 2 watts and programmed with all the gmrs frequencies and having a great time and can put a mag mount on my car with a 1/4 wave ant and go :lol:

Besides that programming old commercial radios for FRS/GMRS wouldn't be legal (they are not certified due to detachable antenna and other things), there are technical problems.

The deviation needs to be 2.5kHz, not 5kHz that all but the most recent radios are. You would be interfering with channels on either side. You could have the TX deviation backed off, but the RX audio would sound weaker; there's no easy way to narrow-band the receive part. So it's not really a win situation.

I realize this would not stop everyone from trying this, just telling you in advance.

There certainly is a lot of bubble-pack crap out there, but surely some good stuff too, which will cost. The Moto T7100 looks OK but at $150/pair. Surely there are or soon will be others.

Jeez,

Guys I paid that price for one Midland Speakeasy Family Radio 1/2 watt about 4 or 5 yrs ago. I don't know what you are complaining about in regards to the prices now a days for these radios. I think they are cheap.
