FRS/GMRS voice scramble

i bought some new frs/gmrs radios from radio shack model 21-1935 they say max range is 18 miles under perfect conditons but i know this has nothing to do with scanners but these frs/gmrs radios have voice scramble sounds like side band to me i was wandering what kind of scrambling that was i am sure its not digatal?

Most likely "voice inversion" scrambling. Some public service agencies use this method of scrambling. It is not difficult to "unscramble", in other words, not very secure.

That would be voice inversion. I tried to find you a link on the WIKI about how it works, but there isn't one. Here is a link to a thread where they are talking about inversion on a FRS radio.

I have 2 of the old DRE inversion de-code units. R/S use to sell portable phones with that mode. I guess I will have to hook them back up for FRS/GMRS. The Anderson Co sheriffs office use that mode 30 years ago until they found out you could de-code for $29.95 and a 9v battery.
