Oh no! Kenwood just announced the TM-291 - same price but way better specs and features.

Nah, just kidding. Sorry, after all that I couldn't resist. :) Glad to hear you made your decision. I think you made the right choice.

Thanks, but I must admit that you had me going there for a while.

The radio shipped today. It's shipping from a neighboring state so it shouldn't take long.

Thanks.

I received the TM-281A today. Not bad for free shipping to receive it 1 day after it shipped.

I'll update with my impressions later. Right now I'm frustrated and I think it has to do with my antenna. I've got to find the problem.

I installed the TM-281A a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it. I have the TM-v71a as my base station so I was already familiar with the menu system.

The radio sounds great and my reports on transmits have all been fantastic. So far I have no complaints.

I hope you get yours squared away. It really is a great radio.

Well, I'd like to thank everyone again for helping me make this decision. It was the right decision.

I was a little frustrated at first because I couldn't reach any more repeaters than I could with my Baofeng. Since then I got my antenna up higher and can now talk 15-20 miles simplex on the low power setting (25 W). I can reach repeaters approximately 40 miles from where I live, also on low power. I am certain that I could do even better if I could get the antenna still higher.

The other night someone checked in on a local net from about 80-90 miles away. Man, I want his antenna,

I wish you years of good use. I'm fixing to buy another one very soon. I'll probably put one of the bigger Kenwood mics on it, too. I have an FT-90R in my daughter's car that's seen better days.

Antennas are funny. I'm thinking you'll find that the 90 mile man was relying more on propagation conditions and location than antenna type. There could have been ducting or some kind of enhancement that changed the characteristics of how his signal was making its way to the repeater. Not sure if he could hit the repeater like that every time.

Either way, you're very fortunate to have a repeater that seems to have decent coverage and gets used. Mine are silent 99.99% of the time, except for when a family member checks in.

Good luck!

I'm sorry that your repeaters are silent. Our repeaters are basically silent too except for the local nets which every county around here has at least one. Ocassionally, they do get used for other things but that is rare. The 440 repeaters are completely silent and that's why I didn't bother to spring for a dual band radio.

I think you are right about propagation conditions that night. My squelch was being broken on other repeater frequencies by signals that were far too weak to actually be the repeater itself so that shows that I was picking up transmissions from very far away on those repeater frequencies. Still, I want that guy's antennas because that was impressive and he had a strong signal too.

I am really impressed with the simplex performance of the Kenwood. That and its sensitive receiver. Add to that its efficiency, and I'm very satisfied that I made the right choice. It's tough too, mil spec, but that doesn't mean a lot to me because I use it as a base station. The only thing I wish it had were a couple of more programmable function keys on the microphone (it has only four). I find myself using the microphone keypad to do 90% of what I want to do.

Not to worry on the repeaters. I've kinda grown used to them being quiet and move any chatter to the club repeater that has somewhat better coverage. This way, I can leave a radio on at night and hear if any of my night shifters need something.

I actually prefer 440, but I have a Motorola MSF with a PROM for station control. I have (had?) some interference from a neighbor's plasma TV power supply and it ended up on my input. So, that cut range, but any time I want to make a change, like change frequency, I'd need to find someone who either had an Epson or Motorola R1800 suitcase programmer that still worked. Once they deadline these things, that's it. I almost replaced that with a Mototrbo repeater, but... nope (I use enough electricity). So, I bought a 2 meter repeater more to tinker with, and we've moved much of our stuff there. That's why I'm using the TM-281As, because they're very cost effective, and they're the closest in operating characteristics to a commercial radio.

Found the same on simplex. Sometimes we can out talk the repeater that way. I have 3 dB Maxrad antennas drilled for the car roofs, so our range is really decent. If we take two cars on vacation (between 6 people), we generally have continuous communication anywhere.

Did you get the programming software? It's pretty easy to use.

Well, I did it. I just ordered another TM-281A from DXE. I was driving my daughter's Jeep and the FT-90R I have in it kept changing channels every time I picked up the mic (the mic is all raggedy because the heat down here does in the outer insulation). I didn't appreciate talking on my repeater's talk-around and ending up unkeying on the repeater programmed into the next channel up. The FT-90R has other problems, too, so now is probably the time to retire it. She was like, "Now do you see why I don't use that thing?"

Now, to find a few XPR mobiles for 440.

Good luck, 902. I think its a great radio.

I'm still trying to get my antenna up higher ... it's tough to be in this hobby and have a fear of heights.

Yup. Does the OP have any radio clubs nearby? Often they have members who are will to help put antennas up and aren't afraid of heights. :)

I can open, with full quieting, a repeater that is 85mi. Anyday or time of day. And can talk simplex fm 35ish miles base to base.
17' 8dbi antenna and a tm-281a.
