Yaesu: FT-710: Question Concerning Using the CW Monitor w/out Transmitting

I was thinking I might try learning the code again, and was wondering if I would be able to use the keyer on my FT-710 with the monitor in order to hear myself without actually transmitting any RF. The radio has the XMIT inhibit turned on, which should keep the transmitter from activating under any circumstances, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to inadvertently transmit. However before I try this, I want to hear from people with more experience than I have, so that I don't hurt any innocent bystanders (neighbors), myself, the radio, or the antenna.

TIA.

What happens if you use the keyer with the XMIT shutoff? Do you hear any cw sidetone? If not you may have to transmit to hear sidetone. If if doesn't work with XMIT off, you could always turn the power all the way down, and transmit into a dummy load. I'm not familiar with that rig. But try that with a key plugged in.

Yes you can do that, while I don't have the 710, just make sure break in is off. (at least that's what is is on my other two yaesu's).
I'm not familiar with Transmit inhibit but with the rest of the CW settings you should see break in if that's off it shouldn't transit while in CW mode.

Indeed, Break In is the setting that I'm unsure about. I think I remember seeing somewhere that break In had to be turned on for the Monitor to be triggered. That's why I pointed out having XMIT (transmit) Inhibit turned on, just in case Break In needed to be turned on. If Break In is unable to trigger the transmitter to radiate when XMIT Inhibit is turned on, then I believe I'll be golden!

Thanks for the input!

I guess I could test this using a dummy load, since at 5 watts it would only draw around 300 milliamps. Maybe I'll try experimenting with it, if I can't get a definitive answer. Thanks for the suggestion!
