I posted on groups.io figuring there would be some answers, there is plenty of traffic, no replys.

A month ago, I reworked the car to replace my temporary IC-705 setup (where it just rests on the cup holders and is removed every day, is really only installed for long road trips) and installed a FT-891 permanently (control head above driver in overhead shelf with other radio control head and scanner) while I was reworking another radio as well.

I just went on a long trip, and found the controls are a bit much while driving, particularly switching between memory groups, I had to save that for fuel ups (approximately 4 hours apart), which didn't quite work with my planning. I don't believe that having the DTMF microphone would make things any better. This with a few other quirks are really bothering me.

I have Pocket RxTX Pro which I used with my FT817 and a bluetooth adapter to control the rig while I was hiking, and it worked pretty well. I did read that for the FT-891 all controls have to go though USB, not the the data port like the 817. I have yet to find a hardware solution that would let me use my phone. Anyone have any other leads on hardware/mobile app options to make its use easier while mobile?

My other complaint is the memories. You have to pick an offset globally, which doesn't work when around town the 6m offsets are all different. I'm really looking for an HF rig with ease of use that will do 50-100W. Unfortunately there are not many current options with memories and a remote head that can do 100W. I think without a solution this radio will have to come out and be a backup desk and/or field radio. I'd love a remote head version of 100W IC-705, which kind points me to the IC7100, but I've never had my hands on one to see if its as easy to navigate as the 705.

Any ideas or hardware I seem to be missing? The HF radio is paired to the Little Tarheel II and the automatic tuner, which simplifies things a ton.

What kind of vehicle is this? Could you put in a console in place of the center arm rest? I am fixing to do this on my 2013 Ford Expedition.

2015 Transit Connect. Center console isn't possible/available. Overhead is pretty nice (hidden from view in parking lots), I just fumble with the controls while driving. I don't remember fumbling nearly as much with the 705, but that took up cup holder space that my wife won't give up, and left it out in the open for anyone walking by.
