Hi There,
I need to enter some DTMF codes but am having a problem. I've followed the process on page 48 of my manual but cannot get to select the star * digit, it's not available in the range of digits shown.
Am I doing something wrong here?

That page is for using WIRES. Are you trying to enter a code? According to the manual, to get the * you need to select the letter "E".

Be advised this is for the old WIRES system not the new WIRES-X.

No specifically. I'm trying to get two of my local repeaters, GB3PI and GB3PE, to connect to each other.
I know it can be done by sending a DTMF code but the code starts with a star, e.g. *70.
Looking at the manual again I think I'm using the wrong option, #15, maybe I should be using #17.
Will give it a go in a short while.

I think you want to be looking at the DTMF Autodialer section of the manual, if you haven't found it already. That's menu #15 on an FT-8800. I don't have an FT-8900 manual handy.

If you were using a menu option that talks about Internet connections, that's not what you are looking for.

Menu 15 on the 8900 as well. It refers back to page 46...

I've owned an FT-8900 for years but have never used the autodial feature. Just speculating but it may be that it only accepts numbers (0-9) and not * or #.

The manual is silent other than referring to storing "up to 16 digits of a telephone number for, repeater autopatch or other uses".

I thought the * key would enter on the MH-48A6J mic. But if not try RT software. Or just use the Mic as will be as quick.
