I have an FTM-300 that i just programmed with the scu-20 and when it turned back on , this showed up on the opening screen like it didn’t finish programming.I have tried resetting it, but after pressing the setup and getting to reset , when I press the top right dial, nothing happens. Is there another way to reset the radio ?? I tried doing a firmware update but the 68 cable will not go into the body of the radio . Any suggestions would be appreciated . Also after pressing setup for more than a second and getting the list to clone, reset etc , the top right won’t let me press anything

I just found out that the radio may have been bricked , so I’m headed to Home Depot and get some epoxy and make it a paper weight.

What he said. Yaesu has a 3 year parts/labor warranty. The radio will fit in a priority mail medium flat rate box and cost you $16-20 to ship to Yaesu and unless it's been Goodwrenched, you'll get back a repaired/replaced radio in a couple of weeks.

No wonder folks have issues. Yaesu could not make it more difficult.

I was shocked how easy the Icom ID-52A and IC-705 were to upgrade after going though the incantations required to upgrade Yaesu firmware.

I have three different Yaesu Fusion radios and I have seen no need to update the firmware on any of them. I suspect there are a lot more successful firmware upgrades than not. We just don't hear about them because only the people with issues post on forums. I also suspect a lot of the issues we hear about are due to operator error rather some inherent flaw in the radio.

I have to ask the O/P, was this radio "MARS modified" too? Just saying, a lot of "golden screwdriver" mods folks do can cause damage, either from ESD, too much heat, tearing off surface mount components with tools resulting in broken traces and internal damage to vias, resulting in exactly what you describe happening to your previous "second FTM-400 that would not reset after a MARS mod". Just asking for a friend...

Will have to agree that the Yaesu firmware updates are not the easiest of chores. Everytime I think I want to do it I just read the manual and then change my mind. My FTM-300 and FT-70 seem perfectly fine running the original firmware they shipped with.

I have ten different Yaesu radios of varying vintages from VX-1 and FT-470 handhelds through an FTM-400XDR and I've never had any major issues with any of them. But then, I don't do MARS mods (they are absolutely unnecessary for the average ham,) I program using RT Systems for all of them and I don't do firmware updates. I suspect that hams that have ongoing issues with their radios are trying to do things with the radios that are beyond their skill level.

I use the RT Systems on mine also and that's one thing I will say seems to work everytime. Don't have any MODS so at least I should not have any issues on that end.

Just curious. That's why I asked. Many folks (not saying or implying you) go poking around inside modern radios which are full of ASFICs and chips, gouge a board with a high wattage soldering iron and wonder why their rig acts weird or won't work at all.

I own an FTM-300DR, FTM-7250DR, FT-5 and FT-2, and all of them are trouble free. The 300DR is left on 24/7 and sees quite a bit of daily use on a local YSF reflector. I've also never modified them (as there is no need to) and are running stock firmware. Like yourself, I use and prefer the RT systems software as it is well written and never had an issue with any of the radios locking up.

That's one thing I won't do is poke around inside my equipment without adult supervision ,short for someone who knows what they are doing and even then I still get nervous. My grandfather was a TV repairman in the early days of televisions and I remember a few close calls with customers trying to fix their own sets.

You got that right. I worked in a TV shop in the early 90s when CRTs were still king. Learned two things: respect the flyback and respect the big filter caps. At 18 years old, I survived being thrown through a wall by a couple dozen KV. Won't happen again!

Same exact thing happened to my Dad in the shop. Same lesson learned. My mom was not happy about him working in the shop lol.

Need to start a new thread about close calls working on electronic. Good safety reminder for everyone.
