I have both the BC250D and BC796D. I have a BCi25D that I bought before the BC796D was announced. The BCi25D must have earlier firmware on it because when I put it in the BC796 the power on message about the card is different than the BC796 card so I doubt it can decode 9600 baud.
The card from the BC796D in the BC250D does not add anything. Both cards behave the same. It makes sense to only make one card for both scanners.
The BC796D is similar to the BC785 except that the BC796D uses a version of the main processor with more program storage space. I assume that the engineers ran out of room when adding 9600 baud trunking support.
It reminds me of when HP came out with their first DVD+RW drive and promised that DVD+R support would be a free firmware upgrade when the DVD+R spec was formalized. It turned out DVD+R support required a new model and HP got bad press because they did not make good on the promise of a free upgrade for DVD+R support.
I have a Plextor 16x DVD burner that started out just doing 4x DVD+R Dual Layer and via firmware upgrades can now do 6x DVD+R DL and 6x DVD-R DL. Plextor could have easily come out with a "new" model with these features but decide to enhance current production. They did not go around saying that in the future it could do DVD-R DL or do DL faster. It could be possible for the drive to do 8x DL.
It would have been nice if Uniden added 9600 baud support to the BC785 but I understand the limitations. At least they did not go around promising it.
