To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

G5 alerting and software problems

I'm using the G5 on an analog vhf system right now but are about to be switching to tacn in the near future. I have the tones for my FD programmed in and it alerts when set to the selective call. But, when on the monitor channel, it won't alert for my dept tones. It will however randomly alert in the middle of dispatch giving out a call for another dept. I've been trying to figure that out so it will alert on the monitor channel, now when I go to the conventional group ID settings I get the following message.

If you want to increase the reception speed, it's recommended setting the Alert Mode in the Group Call ID and Private Call ID Setting section to "Tone" and setting the Alert Tone to "None".
Any ideas?

Thanks

There's two things here.

1. The tones over analog/VHF are going to be slightly different than what you'll hear over digital. The digital vocoder alters the pitch just enough in most cases to require you change your tones a bit to match.
2. Randomly alerting in the middle of a dispatch is probably because of digital artifacts that the G5 is interpreting as tones.

My local dispatch just switched systems, so I had to rebuild an entirely new table of tones to match against.
Luckily they simulcast over VHF, so my G5 still works reliably (and lasts a whole heck of a lot longer).

Sorry it's been a while been a little busy at work. We're not on the digital system yet, still strictly vhf analog only. A new problem has presented itself now.

When on selective call, the pager never alerts. If I'm on the monitor channel when the tones are sent out and switch immediately to selective call, it will alert as soon as I switch the channel mid-tone.

I know to try support, but that links me back to the dealer, and I paid for the programming service just to have to reprogram the entire pager as it didnt open the audio for anything being received. Contacted the dealer and was sent another profile that resulted in the same problems. I did eventually get it to open the speaker but two tone alerting is still no go.

Update, not getting the error message anymore but Im still not able to get the pager to alert for calls . I even called the place that does our programming and verified the tones are indeed correct. I even made a new profile with only the fire page setup for a test and still nothing.

I have tried everything i know to try and nothing works. pager will not alert.

Just out of curiosity, did you make sure the PL/CTCSS tone is configured correctly?

This thread is for p25 trunking. I'm using conventional vhf analog.

There's some others too I'll see if I can find them. I'm guessing you tried what was there and it didn't help?

Okay even for the analog I'm still seeing timing mentioned as the main culprit which is what helped in the p-5 thread also is why I mentioned it. Do you have the actual timing sequence from your department?

OK, I'll change that tonight and see if it works. Worth a shot. As far as the timing they said that is set to default in the minitors so I'm guessing the normal 1000/3000ms.

Here's a thought. Tone b is the same for all departments, but tone a is different. What if I was to set it for long tone and change the timi g to 1000ms, would that work? Is that possible to even try or would I be wasting my time?

I'd say at this point anything is worth trying. Since you are sure you have the correct tones, I'm not sure what else to recommend. I only have one of my G5s working (or even listening ever) to analog and that was hit and miss for a long time. Fortunately there were a lot of posts here from people that helped me get it going.

Maybe as a last resort post the PPS here, and someone smarter than I am can take a look at it and see what's going on.

OK, I did that and set it as a different name than the other tone setso I would be able to tell which one alerts, along with changing the tone timing of the main tone set to 2000/1000ms. And success! The pager alerted this morning for a brush fire. Problem is, I don't know which one did the trick because I used the same name on the tone sets but added "2" to the long tone. When looking at the notifications the name is too long and left off the last couple of characters.

I'm going to now take the long tone back out and leave the other alone and see if it still works.

Glad you're making progress, as I've said all along, nothing ventured nothing gained. Sometimes the Unication's are an adventure, or at least they have been for me.

I've had to often come up with creative shorter names so I could tell what's going on with the pagers. Shorten up the beginning so you can see your number "2" or whatever you're doing there. Hopefully you're on the road to success. Please let us know what you finally come up with that got it working.
