• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've had a G5 and worn it every day for 2+ years in a fairly rough environment as my primary fire pager. For the most part it works great, but I am increasingly seeing problems with the selector knob acting like I just changed the channel. The symptoms are simple; sometimes the slightest touch of the knob (with clothing) makes the channel announcement play even though the knob was not turned. I guess I can get in touch with the dealer and ask about repair, but before I do that I figured I'd ask if anyone else has experienced similar problems.

Does the G5 actually change to a neighboring knob position when you hear the announcement, or just pretend to?

No, it stays on the existing position but interrupts anything it is receiving and plays the knob position voice announcement. Sometimes it'll go off 3 or 4 times in succession just because my jacket is bumping it 'just right' (or 'just wrong', depending on your thought process). It's as if there is a dry joint on the circuit board, although I'm not sure that the switch is actually attached to a circuit board per-se.

I'm going with @WX4JCW's assessment, and I'll bet there's a fair degree of play in the knob as compared to new. Your knob must get a lot of exercise! :)

Yes it does! Two clicks every morning to go from alert-only mode to daytime monitoring mode, then two back again every bedtime. Sometimes during the day it'll get clicked around one more position so I can quickly hear the TAC channels before I get my subscriber radio powered up and running.

Those of us using the Unications as a scanner probably rotate the knob more frequently than that. Thankfully, FW V1.3 lessens that with the addition of hold and block functions.
